Am starting to get anxious. He came home from work yesterday because had started to feel flu-ey – had shivers/shakes alternating high/low temp but no cold symptoms like you get with flu. When he took his trousers off to go to bed, there was a big inflamed patch of skin on his shin so we thought 'aha, cellulitis', which he's had before. Went to GP this morning and GP told him to get to hospital for antibiotic injections. Went at 8.30. Said to expect to be there all day and possibly overnight.

So far so straightforward, but it's now nearly four o'clock and he hasn't called me and hasn't responded to texts/voicemail messages. Am starting to worry... (and have guilty conscience because I downplayed his illness last night on the grounds that he's a man, and they always exaggerate. Oops. Got that one wrong...).

I reckon his phone's off because it's a hospital, honestly.

Can you ring the actual hospital and ask ?

ToujoursMarine · 05/04/2006 15:58

edam, could he be being the best of patients and faithfully not turning on his mobile? Dh is always far more law-abiding on this front than I am, rummaging for his phone as we approach the hospital entrance.
I do hope he is OK and I'm sure he is.

edam · 05/04/2006 15:58

I know you are making sense. But I do wish he'd call me!

There is nothing worse than a dh with his mobile switched off. Grounds for divorce IMO.

cal;l the hospital

edam · 05/04/2006 16:16

Nutty, can't call hospital because I don't have a clue which department he's in and he won't have been admitted yet (at least, I'm assuming if they are going to admit him, he'd tell me about it). I should probably have got a few more details from him before he went, shouldn't I?

More evidence of wifely failings... only it was in the rush of getting ds up and dressed and me ready for work and I just thought 'oh dear, poor you, we'll speak later when we know what's happening'. Only now it IS later...

He even picked up nappies on his way back from the doctor's surgery before he went off to hospital...

edam - try a&e - they may be able to trace him for you, or you could try admissions. just speak to the woman on switchboard and shell maybe help

GDG · 05/04/2006 16:18

If he went to A&E you can call and they should tell you - I did this the other week when dh took ds3 to A&E with raging temp and he didn't call for 3 hours.

serenity · 05/04/2006 16:21

edam - I would assume that he went in through a&e (at least that's how our hospital does it) so he will be on their system even if he hasn't been admitted. Ring them.

When Dh went in last year (chest infection, which turned into jaundice and ended up being pneumonia) he spent the entire night there without being 'admitted'. Lots of a&es now have wards attached as kind of halfway houses, whilst they are waiting for spaces on wards.

wwwnotreallyhere · 05/04/2006 16:22

Call the hospital?

heavenis · 05/04/2006 16:29

Any news, it you call the hospital and explain the situation you should get to find out where he is.

Mfer · 05/04/2006 16:32

Call A & E if they haven't admitted him he could be in the MAU (Medical assessment Unit) either way he wont have his phone switched on - also if hes in the MAU on IV antibiotics he wont be able to get to a phone (but he could have aksed someone to call you with an update).... anyway a long time has passed and you need to know whats happening

edam · 05/04/2006 17:42

He's on his way back, phew! Apparently they've given him a chest x-ray, very confusing.... he's only had injected antibiotics, didn't need a drip or anything, and they've given him a supply of oral antibiotics too.

Thank you for all the advice and reassurance.
