Health issues regarding busy road

Hi! I'm thinking of putting an offer in on a house on quite a busy road (it's an 'A' road in a rural-ish area, but there's a constant stream of traffic). I've got two young kids and wondered what everyone's views are on health issues regarding air pollution. The noise of the road puts me off a bit, but we're not in a position to be choosy financially. However, the main issue is pollution, that's what will make-or-break the deal. I just can't find out how to assess it. I've looked at various websites but I think I need an air survey or something. Has anyone had anything like this done? I can't find out who to contact about this. Also, has anyone been brought up on a busy road and developed any health issues as a result of pollution? Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks.

We moved from a house on a housing estate with full central heating to a rural house,fields on three sides but a dual carriageway about 200 yards away on the other side,dd,s asthma has improved greatly so obviously any traffic fumes are not affecting her but the central heating did(we have central heating here but huge house and its run by oil we cant afford to use it so rely on the wood burner for heating).
I think the two things to look at are
1.How much distance between the road and the house
2 Is there any screening,we have a 6ft fence and there is a row of trees on the other side of that.
I think unless you live in a completely rural location you are going to get some element of traffic pollution,housing estates have cars going up and down all day.

Thanks, I agree. The road is 5 meters away from our house, so we'd be very close if we went ahead! The noise is something that puts me off a bit but the clincher's going to be the health risk.
