Dental implants

Anyone had one? Come and tell me how pleased you are with the result. I'm just back from the dentist, having had the first stage. Feeling very sore and beaten up, lots of stitches, swallowing pain-killers like smarties and feeling rather sorry for myself.... also broke!

awwww poor you .How long does the whole process take?

I had mine 10 years ago and have not looked back. Although all the photos of my 30th clearly show two big gaps with pegs (stage 2!).
I don't recall any stictches though - just big holes for a day or two which reminded me of being 6!

Well, the first session was just under an hour and a half of drilling, prodding, screwing, stitching, Xraying and I've got a small metal button visible through the gum. Going back in a week for stitches out, then have to wait about 4 months before having the actual tooth screwed on. I have quite a bit of bone loss at the site, due to resorption since the original was extracted, so I had to have a sinus uplift too - basically a plug of cement in my sinus (nice, eh?). I know it will be good eventually, and I've put it off for so long. Glad the worst is over, but I'm sitting here moping...

Bumping... just had a tooth out and apparently an implant is the way to go. If you can afford it ...

I've been told that if I did have an implant I'd have to have sinus repositioned which sounds the same as yours OP ?
Which terrified me ,but maybe not such a biggie ?

I also have bone loss ; do you know if you have to have implant quickly after extraction ?

Though bit academic I fear as probably too expensive ...

it was an accident, just a blooming expensive one!
he was drunkenly try to give DH a fire mans lift, when he fell back, planting dh's face onto a low wall.

I had an implant to replace a failed crown which was made to fill the space of two teeth - the eye tooth and the one behind it. Before deciding to go this route I tried to get used to a clip-in denture. It was awful having plastic across the roof of my mouth and the edges poked holes in my other teeth which I had to pay to be filled.

I went to a specialist and it cost £2,500. Worth every penny for the freedom I now have. Paid a bit off every time I went. (not well off and work p/t) After the 1st stage of putting in the post I was checked monthly, giving it time for bone to form around the implant. was nervous about the whole thing but all went well. So glad I had it done. I am booked in again to have another implant to replace a lower back tooth which had split down into the root. With the extraction the cost will be £2,000. I've cut back on everything in order to afford this. I'm in my late 50's and consider this essential for my health.

I had an implant in 2004 - it's been fantastic, worth the money for me. I know it's sore but the discomfort settles very quickly.
Mine was done in 2 stages 6 months apart: I had serious bone loss so they took some bone from my lower jaw and grafted it into the space where the bone loss was, and sewed it back up. That was painful - but worked a treat.

Then in part 2 they did the implant, which was a breeze in comparison. Stitches were taken out after a week or so. The metal 'button' was covered up by the denture I used until the implant crown was placed.
I think it cost about £1500 for both procedures back then. So expensive but so worth it. You'll be glad you had it done OP. Mine replaced a v visible top front tooth and you'd never know it isn't 'real'. :)

I have one too, to replace a tooth that was mistakenly extracted by an idiot deluded dentist who insisted it was cracked (it wasn't).

The implant is brilliant but yes, very expensive - about £1500 all told. I now have a wonderful new (female) dentist and she made the whole thing a breeze. In fact the worst thing was the embarrassment of having to wear a stupid white gown and hat in the chair because it was judged a more 'surgical' procedure than a normal filling or whatever!

I did have to go and have a specialist scan at a dental hospital first because of possible bone loss - in the end she didn't have to build it up with any extra bone, though.

It really has been great, but it's very important to maintain the implant afterwards with scrupulous cleaning, flossing etc. Apparently a lot of people who don't do this end up with the implant failing, so in other words you can't quite forget about them once they're done. But for all intents and purposes it just feels like one of my own normal teeth.
