dd2 has very bad urine infection what should i do next?

took her to docs this morning with a urine sample.was told she has a very bad urine infection as there's visible blood in it.given a course of antibiotics but was told that if no better within 24 hours to go back. all day, she's been playing and running around but - although urine appears to be "clear" again - she's still having pain when "passing". Do i take her back in the morning-dr gave me a red-topped bottle to bring a hospital-sample in if i do bring her back to surgery-or do i see if pain subsides over the next day or two? (obviously, if urine looks reddish brown again i'll take her straight back but not sure what to do about the pain side of it.)

how old is dd2.
she needs to drink plenty, and if you can get her to take cranberry juice in some form or other this stops baceteria sticking to the wall of the urethra. Ibuprofe is more effective than calpol for pain, but the best thing she can do is drink lot and lots

The antibiotics should start working within 24 hours. It might be that as she has been experiencing pain then she is expecting it to hurt? I know when I have had UTI, I tend to put off going to the loo as I don't want the pain.

If she is still complaining after 24hours, I'd take her back with another sample.

The pain is caused by inflamation of the urethra and the muscle that controls the urge to pee, it will be painful for a wee while, I would give it 48 hours and lots to drink plus regular nurofen. Providing the blood does not return it should subside after this.
The pain can also be caused by the urine being to concetrated or acidic, like in cystitus, which is why it is important that she drinks lots to help neutalise her pee.

hi chapsmum.she is drinking lots. thank goodness she loves to drink water and i also gave her some "fruit and barley" as my mum always used to give me lemon and barley water whenever i got cystitis or anything.however, not sure if it's the barley that's the active ingredient or not.(think it is).she is nearly six.do you know, i haven't even given her anything for the pain relief..how stupid am i?!

Is this her first UTI? DD had to have a scan of her kidneys done after an infection to check for scarring. I can't remember if they scan for under 5's or 6's.

I would recommend trying to give her cranberry juice and just see how she is tomorrow morning.

Not at all, its not the firs thing we think of. I am a regular UTI suferer and would say that cranberry juice and lots to drink along with the antibugs and the nurofen is the way forward.
I would normally put a sample in wnyway just to check she is on the right antibiotic. I usually put one in for myself after a course of antibiotics just to check the infection is cleared. (but then I do get alot of UTI's)

Yes, this is the first time i think...she spent a couple of weeks in hospital when she was 15 months due to pains in her spine. that turned out to be a type of arthritis in her spine--can't remember what it was called. don't know if this has anything to do with what she's got now though. mum reckons it can be caused by a knock/chill aswell. thing is, she's always falling so i wouldn't know if she's hurt herself anywhere to have caused this.mainly worried about the blood. i get cystitis now and again but she says she's getting pain "at the end and at the start and sometimes in the middle".presumably stinging.

I had a series of undiagnosed UTI's as achild that led the the failure of one of my kidneys, You canot get a UTI from a chill, it is an old wifes tale.

Make sure when she is going to the toilet she wipes from front to back and that she is not postponing going to the loo. Holding it in can cause UTI's. If she was my wee one I would be asking for a referal for a scan. And would keep a close eye out for more you can e mail me if ou need a chat

i had problems with utis for years until i was diagnosed with horeshoe kidney at 21, by then the damage had been done and i have serious hydronephrosis in one kidney.
agree with chapsmum though, she should always empty her bladder when she needs to and properly too, always wipe front to back, drinking plenty of clear fluids each day will also help ward off infection

funnily enough, chapsmum, i was always in hospital as a child due to "uti"s. i had scans etc.and remember having to pee into a "cake tin".(like a little foil ashtray!).there was a hatch behind the toilet and the nurses were forever opening it to ask "have you done one yet?".(how impossible is it to wee when everyone wants you to?!).anyway, hopefully this is not going to develop into anything like that. sorry to hear that you had kidney failure when you were younger.i think this is why i'm so paranoid as my mum was always concerned that my kidneys were going to pack in on me.i can remember having to sit on a chair at school instead of cross-legged on the floor--how do you explain that to a bunch of 7 yr olds?! and i always tell my kids to wipe from front to back.(and i know that dd2 is a little bit lazy on that score.)thanks ever so much for your support.

Sadi've been reading up a bit on the internet and now i'm scared...forgot about the protein bit until i started reading.by the looks of things, protein and blood aren't a good sign at all and he should have taken a "red top"sample straightaway. why did he tell me to wait 24 hours?

protein is usually just another sign of infection. should dissapear. after it has cleared up.

IMO he should have sent off an infection to make sure she was on the right antibiotics although the results would not have been avaliable for up to a week. by which time they would have found the correct antibiotics. but it is worth doing to have in her medical notes.
I would definatly be sending one off.
