we do have to pay for prescriptions here. I thinm new mums get free prescriptions for a year but then its back to paying for them, so it may work out ok if we can get it privately.

oh yes, Id forgotten about prescription charges - how much are they these days?

The pill is free in the UK.

All contraception is free in the UK, regardless of where you get it from (GP, FPC, wherever). You cannot yet get NuvaRing in this country because it is still going through the medicine licensing service, but it shouldn't be too much longer.

Its very difficult to ask others about contraception because different women have such different experiences with all the types available, some woman may love it and others hate it. Many Family Planning Doctors and Nurses have the Mirena because it is such a good contraceptive (more effective than sterilisation!). You could also consider the Implant or Depo Injection, although I'm sure if you search this site there will be many mixed opinions about all of these things.

If you're nto able to take the combined pill, you won't be able to use NuvaRing, or patches because they have the same ingredients. Some women are not able to take oestrogen component of these contraceptives because of a family / or personal history of heart disease, high blood pressure, breast cancer, blood clots etc.
