Excruciating back pain.. What can this be

I gave been experiencing the most terrible pain predominately at night and mostly around my right side particularly into my ribs. Last night was one of the worst ever pain around my whole rib cage into my back and upwards into my neck. I can barely move this morning I feel about 94. I've been back and forward to doc
It's not gallstones nor my kidneys or spleen. What do you think it may be and any suggestions to relieve the pain?

Have you had any accident, been lugging heavy things or been under a lot of stress? Is it a sharp or dull pain?

If the doctor has ruled out anything 'medically' then what did he suggest?

I'm an osteopath fan.

I've only just had an ultrasound which confirmed all the above was clear so back to docs next week. Not been lifting or carrying or under any undue stress. In so much pain today iam thinking an osteopath would be a good bet too.

I have popped and torn a few discs - sometimes without even knowing how! Osteopathy works wonders for me (I've tried a chirporactor too but osteopathy works faster and with very little pain).

He didn't suggest an x-ray? Ask him to refer you to a specialist. Have you private health cover? Topical painkillers work the best (ie ok, not great) as does puting on warm, then cold in ten minute periods. Don't drink alcohol as this stops you moving in your sleep and makes any pain much worse. Poor you! Try to keep moving though - whatever you can manage - as inactivity can cause more pain too.

Thank you all its v frustrating as this has been going on for a couple of months now. I felt certain it was gallstones as my symptoms pointed that way so now feel back to square one that ultrasound was clear. I have had a chest X-ray that was clear too. No alcohol? That's what's keeping me sane at the mo! Think I'll ask docs for some painkillers as I only have paracetamol and ill make an appointment with an osteopath

Some renal stones are missed with just ultrasound?

Definately get a second opinion. Don't start googling it though - goodness knows what you'd come up with! Kidney stones (but they'd be to the back wouldn't they)? Pain is not norman - so if you think your doctor has hit a blank maybe try another one? If its really horrendous, maybe consider going to A+E (I wouldnt advise a saturday night though). I'm not someone who would advise going for a not accident or emergency but if the pain is excruciating, then at least they will get you tested, x-rayed and scanned faster.

And if its an 'insidey' pain rather than a muscle or skeletal one, then I guess booze is ok! NB - am not DrPaw MD.
