Hysterectomy in January

I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy in January but leaving my ovaries. The op will be done through my abdomen and cutting across my section scar.

No the hospital have told me I will need 6-8 weeks off work which seems a lot (I can't do being at home on my own) and that for at least the first 4 weeks I won't really be capable of doing anything. is this really true? I had a section and when I got home I just had to get on with things albeit slowly.

I know it is a big op and I will be tired from the anasthetic and I reckon a week to get over that. I know about not driving for 6 weeks but is it really as bad as what I have been told/reading?

Yes, because of the internal stitches you will have to take it easy as they say. Someone who's had the surgery will be along soon to tell you what's what.

Yes, this is absolutely true, GSR. My sister had the same op last year and was stunned at how exhausted she felt. She's a stoic old bird - not one to complain - but really HAD to take it easy for over 5 weeks.

Yes, my sister was the same but the hysterectomy is much more invasive and you'll need every second of the 6 weeks! Good luck.

I had the same op as you this yr. I was off work for 6 weeks.

It wasn't as bad as I imagined/expected ie I wasn't exhausted by any means and had I been allowed to, would've gone back to work after 4 weeks.

I think it depends on you/the surgeon etc. It is a big op but I was lucky in that the operation/recovery was very straightforward ie no infection etc. You do need to look after yourself though so, no lifting, exercise every single day and resting when necessary.

Sorting out ds is going to be a huge hurdle.

My mum took the opportunity to hire a cleaner for the post operation period...and never let her go

I had a total hysterectomy and bilateral oopherectomy [ ovaries out ] and had the op on wed and went home sunday morning.I was very tearful two days after the op but apparently this is quite normal.I had no paun after the op but i was off for 12 weeks.I think for people who have the suction method recovery is a lot quicker.The whole experience was nowhere near as bad as i thought it would be,in fact i nearly bottled it the night before and went home ! But it was all fine.One of the worst things was wearing those bloody white stockings ! good luck you will be fine

I was in hospital for 3 days. The nurses will expect you to get out of bed and walk about the day after you have the op. I was horrified at the thought of it but it was fine and walking and moving about honestly does help.

How old is your ds? Do you have family close by?

He is only 4. I am going to try and see a local nanny agency to see if I can get someone to do the nursery run. Dh works shifts and has an unforgiving employer so no way can he change his start time etc. plus I have 1 day a week when ds is with me so I need to get help with that

Unfortunately no family at all. Friends will pitch in but I can't ask them for help spanning 6 weeks.
