Swollen under tongue

Has anyone ever had this? My mouth has been swollen since about January mainly the inside of my lips, but in the past week the area underneath my tongue has swollen and is now really painful even to swallow. Gums must be swollen too as really painful when brushing my teeth. I suffer from anxiety, particularly health anxiety, so no scary answers please :-)

Maybe you should see the Dr though. It could be a simple bacterial infection that would clear up with a course of anti biotics.

Thanks Topsi. Saw the nurse practitioner today who has diagnosed oral thrush. Maybe due to a vitamin B12 deficiency so had blood test as well. Feel less anxious now I have a diagnosis. Shouldn't put things off for so long really it just makes everything a hundred times worse.

Interesting can vit B deficiency cause anxiety? Hope you get some answers.

Vit B12 deficiency can cause fatigue (which is one of the reasons I had to leave my job) and also problems with the nervous system. Thanks for your support.

With all blood results please get a copy of them for yourself so that you can do your own research as to what is the optimum level. You may find that the NHS will be happy for your level to be 'normal' if it is at the very bottom end of the scale. I am pretty sure chronic fatigue doctors like Dr Myhill would want your levels to be at the very top.

Saw the GP on Friday as mouth and tongue still swollen - he says I have a bacterial infection in my mouth and has prescribed erythromcin 4 times a day and told me to rinse my mouth with salt water regularly (urgh!). woke up this morning and seems even more swollen! Read that this could be a sign of poor immune system so bought some vitamins yesterday (the size of them!).

Blood tests all normaly apparently but due to silly brain fog and anxiety didn't ask for a copy.

Back at the GP in ten days to discuss my referral for CBT.

GPs just don't know about mouths. Erythromycin is not usual for oral infections. Swelling caused by infection does not last this long: it hurts, gets worse and either bursts or makes you very very ill. See a dentist and / or ask for referral to an oral medicine or oral surgery specialist.
