Ganglion AGAIN?

I've had one on each hand removed surgically. I don't get them on top of my hand as seems normal, but inside my wrist joints. They are agony. They must be pressing on nerves.

Anyone else suffer? This will be three in about 12 years.

If I use my private medical, is it considered a reoccurring illness because that's not covered? Or because it's a new one, should I go for removal again?

Not much to say about ganglions, but just phone your insurers and ask. Mine are always v helpful about whether they will pay.
Ask your hand surgeon about why you keep getting them

Good point about asking the surgeon. Same guy did do both.

I've just had one removed from my wrist - it was huge. Suffering post-op now as can't move wrist. Have been written off work for two weeks in order to keep wrist straight without using it - no easy task

Was it full surgery or the aspiration?
I'm just more conscious now with children over the risks involved .

Yes unfortunately sometimes the buggars do come back! About 40% reoccur post op. I had one for ages (about 10 years). Never bad enough to do anything about but it was uncomfortable, you do have my sympathy. I would speak to the surgeon about the best option to sort it out.

I went in for day surgery - general anaesthetic.

It's quietened down again this week. Praying it stays that way.

I had one that eventually fixed itself, but they did tell me (as one of the reaso s for avoiding/putting off surgery, given that mine was in a tricky location on my right hand and surgery would risk nerve damage and loss of function) that there was a high chance of its coming back if surgically removed.

I had one on the inside of my left wrist for several years and my GP burst it on more than one occasion, however eventually referred me for surgery. I had it drained with a needle and it hasn't come back (20+ years later!). I was warned that it may come back.

I have no idea if we are genetically predisposed. I think it's possible

shattereddreams - a delayed answer to your question - yes, it was my first one, but the ganglion had been there for 4 years. My GP helpfully told me to 'hit it with a Bible' on both occasions I sought medical advice about it. When I went back the third time he commented on how large it was and said, 'we'd better get that looked at'. I was sent for a xray and then an MRI - so large had it grown, and when I finally saw the consultant I THEN joined the NHS waiting list.......... 8 months later I received my appointment letter. At my post op follow-up appointment, I was told the ganglion had been growing in the nerve sheath and was so large it was affecting my wrist movement. I have an attractive Harry Potter shaped scar on my wrist as proof that you need to get them sorted sooner than I did!!

I had a huge ganglion removed when I was a teenager. It came back within 6 months and grew and grew. then I fell off my skateboard and it went away.
Demand all is done to protect the mechanics of your wrist, threaten them with legal action is they refuse and you experience permanent damage. Wrists are so delicate. It's not like you a moaning because it looks bad, it is seriously at risk of affecting the rest of your life. Bloody shitty bastards, don't let them get away with fobbing you off.
