I have not had a period (dont know if it was even a period or just bleeding connected with coil) since 3rd January due to being messed about with the mirena coil. I've been having strange symptoms over the last couple of weeks, extremely dry skin, my hair seems to be coming out in clumps when I wash it, tiredness, memory loss, lack of common sense, sleep disturbance and bloody hot flushes which seem to start right at my chest then works it way up. I keep thinking I'm being paranoid and its the after effects of the silly mirena coil but I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks, Louise.

How old are you? Have you seen a doctor?

louise35 · 20/03/2006 20:48

I'm 35. I haven't seen a doctor yet but am due to go see my gynae in April as a follow up to the removal of my coil in Feb. I've bought a Menopause testing kit from Ebay to try and put my mind at rest but it hasn't arrived yet. To be honest my GP is absolute crap and dismisses everything that you go to see her about so I haven't really got any confidence in her.

louise I think your gp should test you for a possible thyroid problem?

louise35 · 20/03/2006 20:57

Yes Cam, I thought about that but as I have successfully lost weight over the past 6 months I dont think it could be that as the symptoms I'm showing are for an underactive thyroid and i I had that I dont think I would have been able to lost weight. Please correct me if I'm wrong though as I am not an expert. Does an overactive thyroid produce the same symptoms?

I agree with Cam - all of the symptoms you describe can be caused by thyroid problems.

WigWamBam · 20/03/2006 20:58

Cross posts - I'd still get the blood test done though as you don't always put weight on with underactive thyroid.

Louise - have you been doing Lighter Life / Sorry if not - just thought your name sounded familiar from LL threads ?

I did LL for about 6 weeks and after I stopped I lost quite a bit of hair - a handful every time I washed it ! I also found my skin went terribly dry - probably coz I stopped drinking 4 litres of water every day.

Maybe doesn't cover all your symptoms - but maybe that and a cold brewing could explain it ?

louise35 · 20/03/2006 21:12

Yes it does fit Norah but the problem is I am still on abstinence. I know your hair can shed once you start eating again but I'm not at that stage yet and I am still downing the water like its going out of fashion. I think I am probably worrying over nothing really but with my lack of periods aswell my imagination is running riot at the moment.

I know people who have lost hair on abstinence - I'm sure that's why your hair is coming out ! Maybe it's time to come off the diet for a bit ?

I think after a while you need to give your body a break - how long have you been on it now ?

louise35 · 20/03/2006 21:26

I've been on it since the end of September but I relly dont want to give it up yet as I only have about another stone to lose. I'll speak to my counsellor and take her advice. Thanks for the info.

Wow - that's 5 months - no wonder about the hair !

Well doen on the weight loss ! When I stopped after losing 2.5 stone - I just stopped - no maintenance - just started eating - a lot - and since mid December when I stopped I have only put on 6lbs - and I have eaten loads !!

Your counsellor would probably not agree - but i would recommend stopping it for a fortnight - then start again. Your body just needs a rest from it. Other than that - you could carry on and just acept the symptoms !
