Indigestion That Doesn't Go Away

Can anyone help?

I've had constant bad indigestion for 6 weeks and it won't go away. After 2 weeks I went to the doctor and he gave me Omeprazole, 20mg a day for 4 weeks, which didn't really help. So after 3.5 weeks I went back and he's upped the dosage to 40mg a day. I'm on day 4 of the higher dose and it still isn't working. The doctor also wants a stool sample, to test for Helicobacter Pylori.

My question is, has anyone had indigestion for this long and it not go away with the Omeprazole? I am imagining all sorts of awful things...

please go and ask for it to be looked into by the hospital with a camera down the throat, after 6 wks you should be getting some sort of ease with medication.

My BIL had bad indigestion, felt like there was something in the way/ pain in middle of back area and on checking was found to have a small tumour, - it was removed, a little chemo and hey presto! that was over 9 yrs ago and he's great.

I'm not trying to scare you and this is obviously worse case scenario, but just to be on the safe side!

It depends what is causing it. I get terrible bouts of indigestion that can last weeks and weeks but they are tied into my anxiety and set off by stress.

What r ur symptoms MbwaKali? I also have persistent indigestion at the mo, no pain but feels like there is a blockage or something stuck in my tubes under the sternum area. Just at the point of thinking I must go to doc and get checked out. No helpful experience to pass, just empathy!

That feeling you describe hotfudge , with added feeling of a huge lump behind where an Adam's apple would be, if I had one! I also have the feeling that you get when you're REALLY hungry, all the time and feel like I want to be sick, especially late in the evening. It all started after eating Tarragon Chicken - will never eat it again. Even if I do love it!! Sad

Someone tell me I'm not dying and it will go away soon! Please.

Chicken can harbour some very mean bugs if its undercooked....dh had food poisoning from some chicken once that lasted weeks and weeks. Stool sample is a good idea, but get your GP to test for food poisoning as well as Helicobacter.

That said, BIL had helicobacter infection and symptoms much like yours for months. Course of antibiotics, or something, and he was as right as rain! Sooner you get some results the better, good luck Smile

Could be a hiatus hernia - is it worse when you lie down? A friend of mine had the lump in the throat feeling, it's the constriction caused by the acid apparently - she was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia after an endoscopy.

Good point. I have a hiatus hernia, though my symptoms were just heartburn (and night time coughing, which went with it). Endoscopy is very reassuring, worth asking for.

Thanks everyone. I think I am panicking because my mum died of stomach & oesophageal cancer at a few years older than I am now Confused

Then no wonder you are worrying (())

Assuming your GP knows your family history, I would think they would refer you for tests asap to promote peace of mind Smile
