Should I panic? Or do I just wait for it to come out the other end?!

I think this happened to someone else recently, and yeah, just wait for it to come out the other end.

Twiglett · 19/03/2006 07:41

there was a thread like this a couple of weeks ago .. but I think it was a geomag ball

the consensus was if the ball isn't magnetised don't worry about it .. but if it is magnetised (which I'm almost certain it isn't) take to A&E

also be sure that they've only swalled 1 ball because more than one could cause an obstruction

will try to find thread for you

Twiglett · 19/03/2006 07:44

can't find thread sorry (search seems to be all messed up)

ponygirl · 19/03/2006 07:56

I was sure there was a recent thread, but couldn't find it.

I've rung NHS Direct because I think these balls are slightly magnetic, but they didn't seem too worried. Dd isn't bothered by it, so just make sure she doesn't get distressed or in pain, I suppose.

Oh well. That was a rude awakening for a Sunday morning!

Thanks all!

I did read a precis of some research that showed that swallowing one is ok but two causes problems because they attract each other. This was magnets rather than Magnetix balls though. I did laugh at the time because I thought "What a pointless piece of research" but hey, here it is, being almost useful. Wink

I would take her to a and e as it is a foreign body and like someone else says could cause an obstruction -even in the bowel when it gets that far then you would find yourself in a far worse situation.
Believe me one of my kids once had a sewing needle pass right through into her knee joint and found ourselves in a really desperate scenario when we got her x rayed.

LIZS · 19/03/2006 12:12

didn't someoneelse's child do this a few weeks back - it reappeared evemtually !

jampots · 19/03/2006 12:15

my ds swallowed a 10p piece a few years back - it stuck in his throat but then eventually passed down and then out 8 days later

CaptainDippy · 19/03/2006 12:41

If he is not choking to death, then no worries - I swallowed a 50p (old style!!!!!) when I was about 6ish. I was made to poo on a potty for about threee weeks and it never came out the other end!!!!!! Mmmmmmmm ......... They say that stomach acid can dissolve amazing stuff so don't worry tooooooo much if he doesn't pass it. He'll be fine!! Smile

CaptainDippy · 19/03/2006 12:42

I meant she Blush

NannyL · 19/03/2006 13:03

i swallowes a coin when about 14 Blush.... it came out about 5 days later

purpleturtle · 19/03/2006 13:14

It was my dd who did this a couple of weeks ago. Ball reappeared 3 days later, slightly different colour!

ponygirl · 20/03/2006 09:39

Oh, purpleturtle, thanks for that! She's been absolutely fine since it went down, in fact I keep forgetting Blush. I'm not sure I want to check all her poos, do I have to? Some of them will probably be at school, so I'll never know if I've missed it! I reckon ds2 can do without one of his Magnetix balls! Wink

Joanna4: that's really weird, exactly that needle thing happened to a very old friend of mine when she was 9. She had to have an operation in the end to open up the knee and it left an enormous scar. I regularly trot out this story if anyone is ever doing anything with needles to make sure they don't get dropped.

Thanks for all the reassurance guys. You are fab! Smile

ponygirl,

what is it with these balls, my dd age 4 swallowed one of ds magnetix balls too, afraid you just have to watch poo! i did take my dd to a&e and they x rayed her and could see it in her tummy, said to watch for it coming out as it may have got stuck so do watch for it! Sad sorry not very nice job to do. good luck Smile

ponygirl · 20/03/2006 12:26

Thanks guys. Think I'll have to steel myself to peer at poo for a while. Should I take her to a&e in a week or so's time if I haven't seen it, just to check? As I say, it could come out at school and I'd never know.

mcmum · 20/03/2006 12:55

ponygirl, i would just to be on safe side, as hospital said they could get stuck in bowel, good luck

purpleturtle · 20/03/2006 16:53

Ours didn't flush though, so your dd might be able to report on a reappearance, even if you're not there to check!

joanna4 · 20/03/2006 19:09

Ponygirl how bizarre my dd has a huge scar just like your friend but it has turned keloid so she has had silicone therapy on it and it has shrunk by half.
Wors thing about it was we are sure the needle was away it had been put away but had dropped out unnoticed then the hoover picked it up downstairs and then i took vac upstairs did bex room(and under the bed-unheard of) and she then hid under there for hide and seek! More chance of winning the lottery i reckon. By time it was found sceptic arthritus had set in she really was in a very bad way-we are lucky to have her.

ponygirl · 20/03/2006 23:33

Gosh Joanna, that's awful, what a fright. My friend was 9, and I can't remember if they knew there was a needle missing, but she'd been kneeling on the carpet and felt something, but when her parents looked at her knee, they couldn't see anything. She kept complaining about the pain but they ignored her, for several days iirc. Eventually they took her to a&e just to shut her up, they x-rayed her knee and there was this enormous needle which had worked its way right into the joint. She had to have an operation that took her knee apart to get it out. The scar was enormous, 5 or 6 inches long and about an inch wide, but this must have been about 1976. Her parents felt awful, and my friend made sure they carried on feeling guilty for years!

My son just recently swallowed a steel ball from GEOMAG (similar to Magnetix) and it's been 5 days and it hasn't come out the other end. We've been checking his poop everyday. Can any of you tell me how long it took for it to come out?
