Lump on Achilles tendon

I have a small pea sized lump at the base of my Achilles tendon.

I've been Googling and believe this to be a stress injury from training. I've had it for about 2 months. When I was exercising it was very painful.

I have stopped jogging and take a Body Combat class 3 times per week - keeping my movements low impact with no jumping. I also cycle to work on odd occasions.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be going to the doctors? Will it go?

Hoping someone can offer some advice.

I did try putting this in sports and exercise but didn't get any replies yesterday.

I had something similar a little while back. My Achilles tendons felt quite tender and one felt a bit lumpy. After my diet started going well and I'd lost about 20lb the soreness went away. I found an internet site that suggested a mixture of squats and heel lifts ( 30 of each ) 3 x per day and this did help.

I need to get pedantic in order to help! Where abouts exactly is the lump? Is it actually on the back of your heel or a centimetre or two up your Achilles tendon? Two different possible diagnoses...

I've got bumps on my tendon - got some physio for it - standing on the edge of a step, lowering heels to below step level and using just one foot to push back up - work number of repetitions and times per day up - definitely helped although I need to have another go as its come back for me....

Thanks for the replies.

life the lump is level with the bottom of my ankle bone so higher up than the heel, if that makes sense. It's on the inside ie as I'm feeling down the back of my right leg its on the left side of the tendon.

I'm not sure whether I should be exercising it or resting.

Mine's there - although its more at the back than the side - and perhaps a little higher.

Sounds like it could be a retro calcaneal bursitis.

Rest, change trainers, do the exercises listed by mistlethrush for the next 8 weeks. Avoid going barefoot, avoid hill walking (uncontrolled stretching). Use topical anti inflammatories if you can. Come back if that doesn't help!!!

Thanks life. Am I ok still going my class but keeping it low impact? I do like to keep active and I'm reluctant to rest completely.

Is this something that will eventually go or am I hanging up my jogging trainers for good Sad

More you rest, more likely it is to go completely. By your description it may have been triggered by your trainers so stop wearing those for a while.
I would recommend a gradual return to exercise over a 6-8 period with icing after exercise.
Of course I am guessing at the diagnosis because I can't see it!!

Thanks life.

Changing my trainers was going to be my next step. I have 2 pairs which I usually alternate. I am due a new pair so hopefully that may help.
