Do i need letter from Doctor to take medication on board aircraft?

My ds takes medication which is a controlled drug.
We are flying to America and someone said that i need to take a Doctor's letter to cover myself.

I did speak to my ds's consultant about it and he said he doesn't see why as America uses the drug for more then the UK. So I am rather confused. larsxx

I did when I had to take needles on board (but it's pretty obvious why in that case). Best thing is to check with the airline, they will tell you straight away.

Tried the airline and think I do. Which doesn't help me and the doctor laughed and I feel awkward asking him again.

check with airline again said it's ok explained situation, obviously first person was not too sure. larsxx
