Had a coil fitted three months ago...

Was expecting to have heavier periods per the warnings from the doctor.

First month, extremely heavy period. So was the second. Both months were long too, so on and off bleeding for two weeks. Third month not as heavy but still long.

Have started having some bloody discharge after sex.

Have also had a lower back "throbbing" (right hand side).

Is this all down to the coil "bedding in" as such?

Is this the copper coil?

I've had two in the past. Both caused heavy periods and chronic lower back pain - so much so, that I thought I'd actually done my back in until I had the blasted thing removed and miraculously recovered

Go and get it checked. I love mine but I had to have the first one removed and a smaller one fitted as I was getting pain and bleeding. Now - no problems at all. Totally spontaneous sex and no chemicals!

I have got a doctors appointment booked for Monday now. I knew it may take a while to settle down, but I really don't want to be on the pill anymore, I don't want the injection, I hate condoms, and neither DH or I want to go down the route of anything "final". Am hoping it settles but will be getting it checked out.
