Does anyone take this and if so, how have you got on? Just been prescribed it and about to start. Any tips?

hey, not on this for migraines but for epilepsy following brain tumour.
On a big dose now of 800mg per day.
Took a while to get to this dose and few side effects on the way , foggy head, upset tummy, bit shaky but now fine and seizure free.
Also had bad heads due to pressure in brain and helped with this to, so happy, been on it long time and another side effect well known is the weight loss.
What is your starting dose?

I take 225mg a day for epilepsy. I lost about two stone in weight on thisedicine as it depresses appetite. Also made me very.moody

I take 50mg twice a day for migraine. Before I started taking it I was getting about 15 a month, now I get 2 or 3. I have had a cluster of 8 though. I lost about 6lbs when I first started taking it.

My neurologist put me on Topiramate. I was advised to drink plenty of water throughout the day as it would make me thirsty. I wasn't able to take it for long because it didn't suit me but I know plenty of other people that cope well with it. Weight loss is one of the known side effects (I was kicking myself that I had to stop taking it!)

I was on it for 2 years. It helped the migraines.

I lost weight (fantastic) but it also made me very depressed so I had to stop. The withdrawal from it was quick and easy.

Thanks everyone. I'm on 50mg to start with and have taken my first ones today. I have at least one migraine a week and several rebound headaches so fingers crossed. Love the sound of the weightloss!

Hi Ken. Sorry you are feeling rough. I take 50mg a day, have done for a couple of years. I've never felt sick with them. My Dr did advise me to take them in the evening tho...can't for the life of me remember why....but I do :-). Saw a good improvement in intensity and frequency of migraines quite quickley. Good luck

Hi, I know I am little late to this thread, how are you getting on?

I take 150mg for migraine, at night, have done for about four years now.

You do need to build the dose really really slowly and take them at night.

My neuro said start even lower than 50if nec and I built up over months using the 15mg tabs. He said with migraine over 150mg there is no known decrease in migraine symptoms. Obviously this was four years ago and yes its different for epilepsy.

I lost just over a stove in the end!!

They are fab, once you get to your correct dose and the side effects wear off.

Good luck.
