Period question

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/08/2012 08:30

My periods are usually very heavy and painful on day 1 and the last day. I just had one, it lasted 4 days, 4 tampons, usually I go through a box and tmi but it was a dull brown colour not bright red like usual. It wasn't even really a flow and I normally flood (have had 4dc) there was no pain either.

I don't think I have an infection or anything and I was due on. Do I just mark it down to a really unusual one or maybe a trip to gp just to make sure there isn't anything going on?

Do you have any other symptoms? And bloating? Any discomfort?
I tend to wait until I've had 2 strange periods before going for help... But I bled for 9 months solid before I got help and it was endometriosis so I'm not the best at these things.
My periods have been misbehaving since March and I am finally seeing GP tomorrow.
Without any other symptoms of wait and see what the next one is like.
Could you be pregnant?

ShiftyFades · 16/08/2012 13:32

I'd ^ not "of" Blush

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/08/2012 13:52

No no other symptoms. It almost feels like I haven't even had one! I was due around the 12th so maybe it will start properly soon. I am on the mini pill but yes I suppose there is a chance. Will give it a week, see if it's just been a false start as such.

How old are you? If you are old enough for perimenopause to be a possibility, there could be years and years of variable and odd periods to deal with - mine started to get strange around the time I was 41/42 and have been strange for years now. I'd say less flow than normal makes it v unlikely to be anything sinister - agree that it would be reasonable to see what happens next time.

CrikeyOHare · 16/08/2012 14:27

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying. Your latest period was shorter & lighter than normal and had more brown blood than is normal for you? Yes?

Really, don't worry too much. This happens to me too. I'm just finishing a period which is exactly the same as you've described - including all the brown stuff Grin!

I think it's hormonal & it may have to do with whether or not you ovulated earlier in the month. I'm pretty sure that when I haven't ovulated (and we don't every single month) my periods are a bit lighter & less painful.

Brown blood is old blood, that's all. Not an indication of infection or anything sinister.

Provided you're feeling well in yourself, with no chance of pregnancy etc then this is all pretty insignificant, I would say.

(Have no medical qualifications, though, just my own experience).

Ephiny · 16/08/2012 14:29

How long have you been taking the minipill - could that be causing it?

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/08/2012 14:30

It was all brown the entire duration. No red at all. Plus it was rather thick so wasn't really a flow Blush sorry!

I am 27 and this is the first time it's not been a flood and by flood, I do mean flood Hmm

Been on the mini poll since December. It the only contraception I can use due to PMDD.

Just wondering as I think (like the Mirena) it can make your periods lighter, and even in some cases make them stop or become less frequent.

Maybe give it another month or two to see if things go back to normal, and if not, see your GP if you're worried.

If pregnancy is a possibility, maybe do a test just to be sure!

CrikeyOHare · 16/08/2012 15:14

Fate Always, always see the doctor if you're concerned at all.

But, it's probably that you had a very light period. Like I said, brown blood is old blood.

When you're having a normal period, and it's gushing, the blood flows out and has no opportunity to hang around and go brown. When it's light, there's no gush, so small pools of blood sit around in your uterus and goes stale.

It's pretty normal, really. Lots and lots of women begin their periods with a brown discharge & that's blood from their last period!

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/08/2012 15:15

It hasnt made a difference really, the last eight months have been the same...super plus tampons that need changed every hour or so, that's how heavy I normally am and how strange this one has just been! I doubt I am pregnant but I was late taking a mini pill last month Blush so it's not impossible. I will maybe do a test next week as I am not 100% certain I was due the 12th.

I had the brown light bleeding at beginning of both my pregnancies (at the time when my period was due). I would POAS just to make sure. Otherwise, maybe the pill is causing this unusual period?

If you're normally having bastard periods, maybe a GP appointment might help anyway.

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/08/2012 15:43

It runs down my family line, bastard periods. Both my mum and aunt have had ops to try sort them out. They do my head in because no matter how careful I am, thy are just so bloody heavy Hmm anyways I am pretty used to them.

If this has just been a light period I would happily have them please!

As for pregnancy Confused would not be a good time for that, already got 4 dc, partner is long distance and I am about to start college. Knowing my luck it will be that! Hmm don't want to POAS this weekend as it's DP's birthday weekend, would rather not ruin it with an 'oops' moment. If nothing starts properly come Tuesday I may do one then just to rule it out.

Oh man this is doing my head in. Noticed some spotting yesterday, hurray period. Bled for a day and this morning...nothing. My boobs are sore on and off but I did a test on Saturday and there was a very very faint line, my best friend and I could both see it, however it was an FRER and the line whilst there had no colour, in fact whilst noticeable it was white. So I don't think it's pregnancy but I don't have a clue what's going on. Confused

Tempernillo · 20/08/2012 07:59

If you're on the mini pill it is normal to get lighter/irregular periods or even no periods like you would with the implant/depot/mirena as they use the same hormone, progesterone.

Tempernillo · 20/08/2012 08:00

Sorry just read you r last post! Do another test in a couple of days, a fainting is stil a line! Grin

ShiftyFades · 20/08/2012 08:56

I agree, wait another couple of days.

The upshot is, if you aren't pregnant, it's probably nothing and is mini pill related (even though you've been on it a while). You know your body best and if it concerns you you should get advice.
For me, I'm a "make a note and see what the next ones like" type of person. I guess it's because I've had a lot of problems and 2 operations to try and sort my endo out, so I'm used to having issues now Wink

FateLovesTheFearless · 20/08/2012 09:04

Things have started up again so that's it, putting it down to just my body being a bit of a weirdo. I have been under a fair amount of stress over the last month or so, maybe that's to blame! Anyways, thanks to those that replied. Smile
