Is this arthritis?

I've had a hot itchy rash since last Wednesday that made my feet, ankles & lower legs swell up. On Friday I couldn't walk up & down the stairs as my ankles were so painful & I had shooting pains in my knees. Yesterday the rash was fading but I woke up with sausage fingers & pains in my wrists & elbows that spread to my neck later on that day. For the past week I've also had a sore throat, cough & glands in my neck that swell & these come & go as they please.

So I phoned NHS Direct who said to get some antihistamines, I went to the pharmacist who said antihistamines wouldn't help & I needed to see my GP. My GP is crap with appointments & always tell me its 2 weeks before I can get one so I went to the walk in centre. I did a urine test that was clear for viruses (although it had blood in it, that was ignored & not mentioned again) & she gave me a GP referral for that day & also mentioned rheumatoid arthritis. I saw my GP who wanted to do a blood test but my temperature is too high & he said it would interfere with blood test results so now I'm on antibiotics for a week & have to do a blood test next week.

This morning my legs are unbearably itchy, I have pain in my ankles that prevents me from going up & down the stairs sensibly ( I have to kind of stick out my arse & go up sideways :)) & when I do I can 'feel' my kneecaps. My fingers are useless, when I had to get on the floor to change a nappy I put some weight on my hands to manoevre & had a gruesome sensation that my fingers would just split open like sausages. I can't rotate my hands e.g. to turn a key or take the lid off a jar & my wrists are painful to move. If I interlink my fingers I can't pull them apart as they are so swollen & I can't make a fist as its too painful in the knuckles & too swollen.

I'm 36 & have no other health concerns.

I dont really want to internet diagnose because I am in no way medical. I had cellulitis (unfortunately at 40 weeks pg - not the best time to get it!) and I had symptoms like yours. I couldnt stand up for about 15 minutes because of the pain in my legs and feet. I was fobbed off because of the pregnancy, and it was actually a friend of mine (who is a nurse) who took one look and dragged me down to A&E to get it looked it.
It probably isnt, its just a thought. But at least this will bump your post!

Have you seen this page? www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Rheumatoid-arthritis/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

On my phone so can't do links properly.

I take it you don't have psoriasis?

JollyHockeyStick · 07/08/2012 10:32

Sounds like you're having a grim time of it :(

onetiredmummy · 07/08/2012 10:34

Thanks JHS, I'll have a look now at the link.

No psoriasis, nothing at all apart from this :)

Ok, that's good. Psoriatic arthritis can be pretty nasty and doesn't sound unlike your symptoms, however you need to have psoriasis to get it.

denialandpanic · 07/08/2012 17:01

you don't need to have psoriasis to get psoriatic arthritis actually. a decent % of patients present with arthritis first. I know because I'm one of them.

isleangel · 07/08/2012 17:13

Hi

sorry to hijack the post but my DH has been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis last night after 5 years and was just wanting to know does the treatment work? They are going to give him methotrexate and steroid injections cause antiinflamatories aren't working any more

JollyHockeyStick · 07/08/2012 19:21

Sorry, denial, and everyone, clearly I had the wrong impression there. Didn't mean to confuse anyone.

MiniTheMinx · 07/08/2012 20:24

Hi OP, it doesn't sound like arthritis. Could it be Rheumatic fever? Have you had a bad cold or sore throat, ear ache before in the last couple of weeks?

It follows other infections like strep (easy to pick up when always changing nappies, not that baby has it, so don't panic) it effects the skin causing redness, rash, fever, causes fluid like swelling, painful joints and can effect the heart.

I would recommend going to A&E

Reenypip · 07/08/2012 21:01

Sounds like some kind of infection maybe or reaction.
You said you've only had a week? Is this the first time?
I didn't think arthritis was like that. And you had to have symptoms for a certain number of months until got diagnosed with that.
