One lumpy breast

I've NC'd as people in RL know my nickname.

Sorry, not the best time of day to start this thread but it's at night when this is on my mind, dh has gone to bed and I'm trying to persuade myself that I am imagining things.

Over the past few (5 or 6) weeks my right breast has started to get lumpy, it's not a lump but there was a section of it that was generally lumpy having very much harder bits and softer bits and now all around the main breast is lumpy, the exceptions are the nipple area and up towards the armpit. The lumpy bits are very slightly painful but that may be because I keep poking about. The other side has no noticable harder and softer patches.

Because it's not a proper lump I'm hoping it's nothing serious but could it be a hormonal thing? If it's still ongoing then I guess I will have to go to the doctor once the kids are back to school but I'm really not keen to as last time I went it was for gynae stuff (prolapse) and she's going to think I'm some kind of oddball if I ask her to look at another private part.

I'm mid-30s and my mum has only just gone though the menopause so I don't think it could be that, I'm not on any contraceptives and my last pregnancy was over 4 years ago. Has anyone else had this or can shed any light on what it could be?

I have something that sounds similar. It was actually my GP who noticed it first. She was doing an exam and said, "have you always had these lumps here?". I hadn't! She sent me off to get tests right away. It turned out they were non-cancerous, but it was a very scary few days while I waited to get in to the hospital and then waited for results.

Please do get checked.

hello - first of all don't feel you are bothering your GP with this (am always thinking oh god I've already shown him all my bits,I can face showing him any more !) it's always a good idea to get any breast changes checked out. It could well be hormonal or possibly an infection, but do go,otherwise you'll keep worrying and continue to prod which will make you sore.

btw,if you want a hand to hold if you are sent for tests, then skip over to the Tamoxifen thread- loads of hands and experience of this there x

Hi. I'm also mid thirties and had lumpy breasts and one significant lump. The gp was reassuring, but wasn't sure what was going on and I was referred to the breast clinic. It turned out that I am just a bit 'lumpy' and the the larger lump.was an abscess. Oddly, it didn't hurt particularly and came up quite some time after breast feeding finished. They think that it may have been that a germ had got into my breast tissue and had been sitting around for a while before becoming a problem when I was feeling run down and my immune system wasn't functioning properly. The type of bacteria it was suggested it wasn't milk residue. I have since been in and out of the clinic for ultrasounds until they were finally satisfied all was ok again. I still have lumpy breasts.
The advice is to go to the gp if you notice any changes. Don't worry by yourself - find out what's going on and move forward from.there. I was really scared about it, but as soon as i went i felt better, even before the relief of diagnosis. X
