amitriptyline and alcohol??????????????????

I've been prescribed Amitriptyline for nerve pain. A low dose of 10mg. The label says don't drink alcohol.

All I can find is not to drink when its prescribed for depression. The starting dose for this is 75mg.

It just says that it will increase the risk of drowsiness. Has anyone been on this dose and had a drink?? what happened???

I used to be on this dose and still have the odd night out drinking. I was pretty alcohol intolerant anyway and used to be sick after a couple of drinks but I'm pretty sure that it was because of the tablets.

Have taken it at 75mg plus before and been a zombie in the morning.

Would definitely exercise caution with alcohol until you know how it affects you.

I am trying to get a low dose to help back pain so would be interested to hear how you get on.

I take it and have the odd drink. I don't drink a lot anyway and didn't know I wasn't supposed to on this. Didn't notice any difference.

I take up to 25mg and can drink fine with them.

One or two drinks have no effect at all but I do find that a boozy night out makes me pretty much useless the next day. Not sick, just absolutely shattered the next day.

I've been on a low dose of this for years (5-10mg) also for nerve pain

I do drink on it, always have done- do find it self limiting though as if I take 10mg I start nodding off after about 1030 Grin

I mix it with drink too. Well not actually mix it intot he drink, but I have more than the odd glass of wine wiht it.

The reason you don't drink on it for depression is the depressive affect of the alcohol wipes out the benefit of the drug. You should be ok to drink sensibly on it but too much can have an adverse affect.

I'm on this dose for lower back pain. A glass or two of wine is okay but anymore and I just fall asleep.

I suspect it probably depends upon your usual alcohol tolerance levels and mine coming so soon after having DD are zero

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a go then. Maybe not on a school night tho.

I was seriously weighing up the pros and cons of no pain vs alcohol!!! Not thats I'm an alcholic but I do like a glass of wine!!
