Ouch! Bruised coccyx - what helps?

I fell downstairs yesterday and badly bruised the base of my spine - sitting or lying on my back are extremely uncomfortable and driving is almost impossible - is there anything which will make it better or is it just a matter of taking painkillers and waiting? How long do these things take to become bearable?

I fell on the ice skating rink when I was 17 years old which is a long time ago now, but the Doctor was called as it was so painful, not even one little bruise showed but he advised bed rest for one week ,actually needed another from work due to bending down a lot at my work. Have had no repercussions since.

you have my sympathy basildon this was me 6 weeks ago and I'm still sore-although I can sit 'properly' on a soft seat/drive short periods now without practically passing out with the pain. Although if I'm sitting where I can sit sideways off my rear I do as otherwise it's like toothache in your arse post proper sitting.

I went to see the Doc and got some 'good' pills, both types-heavy painkillers and anti-inflammatory. In a couple of weeks a blow up ring may help but I used lots of pillows for propping and lay sideways when I wasn't standing up.
