Aching fingers.. Allergy or RA

FOr the last couple of years I've noticed that if I drink white or rose wine that the next day my finger joints ache. Did a bit of research on line and found a link with sulphites in wine and aching joints. Anyway, having not had any wine for a year or so I then got pretty sloshed on a couple of cheap bottles of rose with a friend on my birthday. The next day my knuckles, knees, toes and even ankle joints were agony and I could barely walk. It all eased off over about a week but my finger joints are still not right and they are aching when I wake up in the morning. Anyone any idea what this might be ? Is it an allergy or the start of RA ? Bloody wine, dangerous stuff.

I get this! It got worse and worse, to the point where I stopped drinking completely about 7 years ago.

I had a form of arthritis years ago, which flared up when I drank wine. (it was an auto-immune disease which burnt itself out after several years thank goodness). I also have fibromyalgia and Raynaud's disease, both of which (in my case) don't like alcohol.

It isn't necessarily RA so don't panic. But it's worth going to your GP and asking for a blood test as a starting point, and then ask for a referral to a rheumatologist. And ask about Raynaud's and fibromyalgia.

FWiW I worked in the wine industry for several years and you're right - there is a lot of evidence that sulphites in wine are BAD. Have you Googled sulphite-free wine?

Thanks MrsMcenroe. It might be something auto immune as in the past I suffered with auto immune thyroiditis which buggered up my thyroid. What are Fibromyalgia symptoms ?

Check out this link - www.ukfibromyalgia.com/ - for more details about fibromyalgia.

I'd get down to the GP if I were you, and stay off the wine for a bit!! I still really miss drinking, and every so often I have a sip or three and I feel pain in my hands within a minute or two, so it just isn't worth it Sad

Good luck Smile

I just googled 'joint pain after drinking alcohol' and found loads of people posting on it. I'm not alone in being a weirdo Grin

Disclaimer: I'm not a medical professional

I would advise you to see your doctor to get RA/inflammatory arthritis ruled out. Early diagnosis and treatment is key. It might not be (could be anything really!) but I reckon seeing a doctor can't hurt. ;)
