Urgent migraine help

RollerCola · 29/07/2012 09:40

I woke up with a hideous migraine. I took 100mg sumatriptan at 7am (my last one) which normally works fine but it's not shifted it.

I'm panicking now as it's one of those full-on pounding headaches and I feel really sick. What else can I take? I'm guessing i was too late with the sumatriptan and my stomach has already ground to a halt. Will something soluble help? Food?

Definitely try to eat if you can.
If my tablets haven't worked I try a strong sweet coffee, sometimes the caffeine and sugar hit helps. Also a wheatbag on the back of your neck to try and get the veins to relax.

Catsmamma · 29/07/2012 09:50

i wouldn't eat at that stage, you'll only see it again. :(

Hot shower will sometime work to ease it off for me....I usually sit on the floor of the shower and let the water hit the back of my neck, hot as you can bear.

Thanks, I've had some soluble anadin extra with a coke (had a coffee earlier too) and am just going to have something to eat.

The sickness is more of a feeling rather than actual sickness - I never normally really vomit so food should hopefully stay down. Will have a hot shower in a mo too. Thanks so much

The only think that works for me is a drink of milk, 3 liquid nurofen and a dark room to sleep it off. I'm done in for the day though then.

Can you go back to bed?

RollerCola · 29/07/2012 10:00

I can go back to bed, the kids are fine. Never heard of milk helping before - ill have some of that too, can't hurt!

Definitely sleep through the worst of it.That's what I usually do. Make sure you have a good drink of water first so you're not dehydrated. Hope you feel better soon :)

Thanks everyone, think it's finally lifted. The soluble anadin & coke didn't work, so I went out to buy the only thing that ever seems to help when I've tried all the usual - Benylin n cold & flu. Not sure why but it does and it has.

I've tried non-branded versions of the same stuff but they don't work either, must have something to do with the capsules.

Anyway feeling better now thanks.

roller you could ask your dr for some prochlorperazine to go with the imigran. it stops the nausea and is very effective. you can take a combo of imigran, prochlorperazine and asprin/coke.

Buccastem/Stemetil (the 1st one is recommended as sublingual so faster absorption, and available over the counter in certian pharmacies but the stemetil-tablets have higher dose)

If you still get them bad on preventives ask for Dipipanone/Cyclizine by far most effective thing as strong pain killer with fast release and anti-Emetic in same tablet. Ergotamine is available too by prescription but more risky, should be (close to) last resort
