Have I got bloody buggering tonsillitis?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 21:53

Sore throat for three days now. Blinding headache the first day which thank the stars has now gone. Hurts to swallow, even hurts right up to my ears.

Had a look for likely symtoms online. Dh thinks my throat looks a bit swollen. Other than that, that's about it.

Never had it before. Am a bit clueless. Thanks for helping a clueless person in some pain, it has to be said.

Hope you feel better soon
I'm in bed with a stinking cold, upset Tum and auful period pain.
I really sympathise/ empathise with you.
Let's have a lemsip together.

stargirl1701 · 28/07/2012 22:02

I've had tonsillitis twice. My symptoms:
Incredibly sore throat
White spots on tonsils
Enlarged tonsils
Swallowing felt like glass shards

I used paracetamol, ibruprofen and codeine to control the pain. 2 every 2 hours unless I was asleep.

Stayed in bed, drank water and smoothies, listened to R4. I felt better after a week.

Springforward · 28/07/2012 22:03

Might be. Worth a chat with NHS Direct over whether your gp could help?

IME tonsilitis = massive swollen spotty/ pitted tonsils which you can easily see in the mirror yourself, plus foul taste/ breath if you're unlucky.

TaggieMandevilleBlack · 28/07/2012 22:03

Do ypu jave white pusy spots on your tonsils?

Are you puky?

Does your breath smell like rotting meat?

Of yes, then prpbably.

Sympathies.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 22:09

Don't think my breathe is any worse than usual that bad. Other than the painful throat and neck I feel fine. No other symptoms. It does feel like swallowing glass though, that's a good description.

I'll take you up on the lemsip offer chikydoo, thanks!

I'm nearly out of nurofen. Damn.

Can recommend gargling with soluble aspirin, also chloroseptic spray which is an anaesthetic.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 22:22

Oh I have got some anaesthetic throat spray. Stings like hell though.

Anyone know how long this is likely to last? I'm supposed to be visiting an aunt & uncle on Wednesday, my uncle is poorly and not really supposed to be subjected to any viruses. I don't want to give it to him, and frankly I'm sick of it now, I'd quite like it go now please.

Kettle's just boiled, lemsip is on it's way.

Aww you poor thing. You may well have it (BTW the 'swallowing glass shards' description is right on IME)

See a doctor - You may need antibiotics. There are different types of tonsillitis and for me, time/home remedies have never been enough to treat them. Now that I've had it several times I just know when I have it, but still have to see a doctor each time for stronger medication.

ineedamiracle · 28/07/2012 22:56

I've had the bastard tonsillitis since Wednesday - on Thursday, I was convinced I was a gonner and went to the GP. She was very impressed with how sen my tonsils were and the fact that the right side of my neck resembled the elephant man. I've got 10 days of antibiotics, soluble aspirin for gargling (extremely difficult when your swallow reflex has completely buggered off) Co-codamol and ibuprofen for pain. Still in too much pain (and now with aspirin in my lungs) had to resort to anaesthetic spray. Terrified of the usual antibiotic side affects so forcing Actimel down which so far is working (fingers crossed).
Quite frankly, I would rather give birth than this Sad Hope you feel better soon x

ineedamiracle · 28/07/2012 22:57

"sen" ?? SWOLLEN !! I may be slightly over medicated Grin

crazynanna · 28/07/2012 22:59

Beware a Quinsey. I have had a Quinsey

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 23:03

Shouldn't have Googled...if I could scream and run for the hills, I would now be Snowdonia bound SadSadSadSad

crazynanna · 28/07/2012 23:06

Sad I thought I was fucking dying with the pain.

Seriously the worst pain in my life...and I have had a dry socket

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 23:06

Anyway off to bed now. Thank you very much for all your kind words and sympathies to all the fellow sufferers.

Would very much like to know what a Quinsey is though, for future reference and avoidance, obviously. Sounds awful. Big hug to you brave lady.

crazynanna · 28/07/2012 23:08

Smile thankyou

I will tell you all about it when you feel better...I don't want to scare you now.

Just keep up the pain relief. Night

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 23:09

Oh god I've just googled it too.

[shudder]

You are indeed a Brave Lady. That looks bloody awful.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/07/2012 23:11

I don't know why that turned into a link. It wasn't meant to.

Sigh.

Think I need to go to bed now. Am dosed up so hopefully I will fall asleep very quickly and not think of Quinseys.

I will try to distract myself, with something like The Walking Dead, to take my mind off the horrible thing.

OP posts:
crazynanna · 28/07/2012 23:12

too late...she googled

Didn't want to tell you 'till your infection had passed.

A&E doc said "it isn't really dangerous until you start drooling so don't worry"

I replied "I have been drooling all day"

He said "ookkkaaayy let's get this cannula in and bleep emergency ENT"

Shock
fuzzpig · 29/07/2012 08:54

How are you feeling today? Are you going to see the doctor tomorrow? (or a walk-in GP today if there's one near you)

I'll suffer with you, I found out yesterday I have pneumonia so I'm staying in bed while the drugs hopefully kick in. I hate being ill.

Forgot to mention yesterday - it is of course essential to finish any antibiotics, as if an infection doesn't clear up fully it will come back later. I had tonsillitis four times in under a year and the last doctor (who looked at me and said "you've got tonsillitis" before I'd even sat down Confused) said that the ABs I'd finished before weren't strong enough, so I had to have a stronger type to finally clear it (and actually I haven't had it since then - over 7 months I think - so it looks like he was right).

I hope you can see a doctor who is thorough - tonsillitis is a real wankbadger to get rid of Angry Thanks

I guess you can't give actual grapes to a sick person if they can't swallow

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 29/07/2012 09:06

Aww, thanks fuzzpig and crazynana. Wink

Still feels really sore this morning. What a Bastard.

Don't know where I could get some AB's on a Sunday?

Supposed to get ony treadmill this morning. I only do a bit every other day and I don't want to miss a day but feel very sorry for myself right now. Can't do it tomorrow, got workmen in the house all day and Nobody sees me sweating my fat arse off but me.

OP posts:
fuzzpig · 29/07/2012 09:31

Do not get on that treadmill! you are ill FFS woman! Your arse should only be in bed or on the sofa until you are better. :)

As for ABs - it is only tonsillitis that has ever made me yearn for ABs to be available over the counter! But they aren't. I can see why but it is frustrating waiting for a doctor when you already know what's wrong and even what to take for it. Unless you have an out of hours thing (seems to vary by area, we are lucky to have one here) I guess you might have to wait until tomorrow :(

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 29/07/2012 09:52

Well I did lose a pound and a half last week, and as I'm hardly eating I'm probably on track to lose a bit of weight this week, so I guess I could give the treadmill a miss.

Feel very bad and lazy when I miss a session. I shouldn't beat myself up about it really should I? When I am actually a bit ill.

Am on my own this Sunday morning. Kids had a sleepover and dh has had to pop into work. Feeling lonely and sorry for myself. Glad MN is here.

Oh and I just typed 'sh' and my phone autocorrected it to 'dh' for me. Love that!
