Swollen Lymph Nodes

I'm hoping someone here can reassure me and point me in the right direction!

DP has had a sore throat and swollen glands for about 3 weeks now, only other symptoms are feeling like he has a cold. He went to his GP last week who said that it was his lymph nodes that were swollen and he prescribed antibiotics (500mg of amoxicillin 3 times a day for a week). DP went back yesterday as they told him too but the nodes are still swollen, his sore throat is worse and they have now referred him to a specialist for tests.

DP asked no questions at all! What kind of tests will they do? What else could be causing it apart from the 'C' word which is all that seems to come up when I google. Also what kind of doctor would they refer him to? We were thinking of going to see someone privately but I don't know where to start looking.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Glandular fever would be the first test I suspect, followed by cultures from his throat to see if it is a bacterial infection and what antibiotics he needs.

Cancer is a possibility but way down the list.

I would expect blood tests. I had a gland the size of a tennis ball in my neck after having visited the GP three times in a week as I felt really unwell. GP thought it was a virus. I then went to A&E who put me on a combination of very heavy anti-biotics and did blood test and it turned out I had an out of control staphylococcal infection probably through an insect bite. The right combination of antibiotics did the trick.
