Son excessive eye squinting

My son is nearly 11 and for the past couple of years he has on occassions had excessive eye squinting. I have had it checked by a doctor who to be honest could not wait to get us out of the surgery he just said he would grow out of it...helpful!
Today at his assembly he spent the whole time squinting and blinking and to be honest I find it alarming. When I ask him why he is doing it he says his eyes feel irritated and dry. A couple of parents have mentioned it to me now as it is so noiticeable in assemblies and other school activities just not sure what to do. He is off to big school in September and I dont want him to get teased. It does not happent all the time. Can anyone relate to this?

take him to an optician to get checked out?

Does he have any allergies? Are his eyes sore? Can he see ok?
Does he have any other movements at all - tics?
Think optician first then if no physical problem with his eyes sounds like a tic. Many kids get tics and they usually pass.
