RATHER FRIGHTENING RASH SPREADING UP MY THIGHS

had my baby 4 months ago. never had any skin complaints before. since birth very dry skin on hands especially on each finger before the knucklen and on thumb/side of thumb...thought it was just dry skin due to overwashing hands with newborn. it never went away

then gradually developed similar rash all along underside of arms

then on tuesday this week i grew some symmetrical red rash patches on bback of hips...
also noticed a couple of small 10p piece size patches on inner part of knee...since wednesday these have grown and grown and now creep 3/4 of the way up inner thigh.

rash is red like sunburn; patchy not solid and is raised

just had a bath, smothered myself in diprobase and noticed it is now developing on back and top of my bottom

it's not itchy but it is very sore to touch

what the hell is it? and how can i stop it? i have a doctors appt on monday afternoon but i'm baffled as to what this is and wondered if anyone else experienced something similar??

Any chemist will sell you piriton - in tablet form probably - but if you're breastfeeding it'll tell you not to take it.

edam · 03/03/2006 23:09

It's an over-the-counter antihistamine. Ask any pharmacy.

purpleturtle · 03/03/2006 23:09

'It' being the packet, not the chemist.

re-reading this it sounds something like I had soon after the birth of dd2, only difference was my rash was very itchy. The GP said that it was my body going into overdrive fighting of a simple sore throat or bug etc, and it forgot about the skin, so my body just erupted in red raised lumps.

jenjam, I hope someone comes along soon who has experience of this - but in the meantime, since my DS was born my hands have been exactly the way you describe yours, I think alot of people find that their skin really changes after pregnancy.

With the rash, I wondered if it might be hormone related but I am really guessing so don't listen to me - it's just that your thread caught my eye because during pregnancy I developed a big rash on my legs which my GP diagnosed as pregnancy related. I'd nver heard of it before! Mine looked exactly as you describe yours but was actually very itchy indeed rather than sore. Mine disappeared after the birth, but I did hear of someone who had it during pregnancy, it disappeared after the birth but then re-appeared a few months later.

It could be related to this or not at all, is it worth phoning NHS direct or going to an emergency Dr's surgery if your GP runs one on a saturday, if it's really troubling you?

I had a rash in the last week of pregnancy with ds1, It was mega itchy!!!!!!!!!!! and lasted 6 weeks - drove me practically loopy!

FWIW - Piriton isnt reccomended whilst bf, but I was allowed to take it so you may well find your gp will let you take it - I was given it in hospital cos i couldnt bear the itching - I dont think it worked though

A friend of mine suffered with a rash like this cos she drank a bottle of beer Shock

Hope you get it sorted soon.

thanks everyone - lots of sparkly people on this thread!

yep am breastfeeding so want to avoid anything that might not be good for baby

also had a cold mon-thurs this week so perhaps my body was fighting that and kicking up elsewhere

or perhaps it is delayed shock / birth trauma!!
