Oh wise women of mn please help! I have such an annoying health problem at the moment and wonder if you have any ideas...

I get a pain that starts in the middle of my rib cage (upper abdomen) and is pretty debilitating, it is usually accompanied with a slight cold sweat. If at home I normally lie on the ground groaning until it passes, which takes anything from 5 mins to a few hours. Afterwards my upper abdomen feels very tender, but then, nothing, absolutely no pain whatsoever. If I'm out I get more and more uncomfortable until I get home and then I vomit, then the pain goes. This vomiting had happened three times now and it's really annoying!

The pain seems to sort of travel to my upper back then down into my bowels (sorry) so I was wondering if it was wind. Then presumably if I drank/ate on top of it that would explain the vomiting. I have been to the dr's who prescribed ranitidine for acid reflux but I have continued to get the pain (have been taking if for 2 weeks now). I also wondered if it could be some kind of muscle thing? I have been running regularly for the past 6 months after ds2 was born 2 years ago - could it be some kind of after pain/ tightening thing?

I don't think it's anxiety related.

Sorry I have really gone on but it's starting to affect everyday life - it tends to happen every day for a few days then nothing for a couple of weeks. Any ideas?!?! Thank you!!

gallbladder/gallstones by sound of it

cocolepew · 13/07/2012 18:59

Os it on your right side? If so my guess would be gallbladder. Also, get similar symptons with ovarian cysts. Either way you need to get it checked.

lisad123 · 13/07/2012 18:59

Gall stones or stomach ulcer. If the pain goes round the back rather than though to the back it's classic gall stone pain. Sad

eastendywendy · 13/07/2012 18:59

Yes I'd say gallstones.

Dropdeadfred · 13/07/2012 18:59

I second that diagnosis!!

minimoonumbertwo · 13/07/2012 18:59

Thanks outtolunch, have you suffered from them? Is it a straightforward diagnosis? Thanks

Thanks everyone! That was quick! Can it be completely random then? Like, nothing for a few weeks then everyday? Also it's not really in my right side or doesn't that matter?

Ok, will go back to doc, how do they diagnose do you know? Am a bit scared now! Does this mean an op?

Mine got pretty bad very quickly but don't think that's standard.
Blood test and scan to confirm. Op is normal but day case and key hole mainly.

out2lunch · 13/07/2012 19:08

yes and no Smile

i had what you describe off and on for a long time - never got it investigated as it always went away i assumed it was some kind of food allergy

then years after was diagnosed with a unrelated chronic illness and since then haven't really had another attack although had different burning back pain and was diagnosed with a peptic ulcer after seeing gp and treated with tablets and told if the tablets didn't work it could be gallstones and i would need further investigations

seems to have gone away - fingers crossed

Have you had a cough/chest infection at all?

I had similar pain and was diagnosed with costochondritis which is where the rib cartilidge gets sore. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest and spread down to my bowels.

Do you have access to 111?

Go to docotrs or A and E. Don;t suffer!

minimoonumbertwo · 13/07/2012 20:41

Thank you everyone so much for taking the time to reply and share your stories, i really appreciate it. Will make another appt with doc. I hope all of you who have been suffering are on the mend now. Thanks again.

ToothbrushThief · 13/07/2012 21:18

Does it occur after fatty foods?

minimoonumbertwo · 13/07/2012 22:23

No it doesn't seem to be linked to what I eat

Do you feel full quickly? Nauseous? Dizzy? Periods ok?

minimoonumbertwo · 13/07/2012 22:43

Hi coco, no I don't have any of those symptoms, nauseous only while having the pain. Periods seem ok.

OP posts:
cocolepew · 13/07/2012 22:45

They are ovarian cyst symptons, so it probably isn't that. NOT that I'm a dr obviously!

minimoonumbertwo · 13/07/2012 22:51

Thanks coco that's a relief. The more I google gallbladder/stones the more that seems likely. Thanks for your time & help.
