Could it be whooping cough?

I've had a chocking cough for over 2 weeks. I ignored at first as I assumed it was just a virus. It now seems be be getting worse and I'm having bad coughing fits that make me gag and wee [embarassed]. Just wondered if anyone has experienced whooping cough as an adult or am I just getting a bit paranoid having read the papers?

Hi Shebird. Didn't want you to go unanswered. A friend of mine at work has had a similar thing. Her drs are rubbish couldn't get in to see anyone, :( she's not one to make a fuss, but was really quite rough. Anyway, I don't know the exact details, but the drs dismissed her at first, but she kept going back ( or trying to) over several weeks. Anyway, long and short of it is they eventually tested her for whooping cough, and it came back positive. She's in her mid 40s

My DH is still getting over whooping cough after a very bad coughing fit that resulted in him being rushed to hospital by ambulance in the early hours on the morning in May.

We eventually knew it was whooping cough by the way his breathing went straight after coughing. He literally does 'whoop' as he breathes in. The coughing fit was lasting anything up to 3 minutes which always resulted in his lips turning blue and he would often vomit too.

Its been about 6 weeks now and the coughing fits are becoming less frequent, maybe just once or twice a day at the most. At the worst part of the coughing, he was having coughing fits up to 20 times a day. It was awful and not something I ever want to experience again.

If you have any questions, I'm happy to try and answer them for you. Hope it isn't whooping cough that you have, it truely is a nasty experience.
