Nits or somethingelse?

ok, DD 4yrs is constantly battling nits. im forever wet combing and occasionally using nit shampoo. i keep checking my head and on a couple of occasions find 1 or 1 but then nothing. the past few days ive been itching like mad an my neck and head are covered in red bite-like spots but no nits in sight. do nits leave bites? am i just missing them? does the electric comb really work? could it be a reaction to something?

sorry if you are now itching!

Yes they bite, they live of your blood. Are you getting rid of eggs as well as lice?

Would maybe think you have them and keep giving them to your child, really tricky to get rid of the feckers on your own head.

FannyFifer · 07/07/2012 21:16

Have you anyone that can check really thoroughly for you?

mumnosbest · 07/07/2012 21:20

yep going to see dsis tomorrow and have already packed the comb.
dd never has red spots. mine go right down my neck to my shoulders. do nits go that far?
:( @ giving dd nits. i hope not and yes im also scraping the eggs out with comb and fingernails.

Some people can take an allergic reaction to them so could be possible.

Have you a nitty gritty comb?
They are the business.

If you were anywhere near me I would gladly check for you , I love nit hunting, lol

mumnosbest · 07/07/2012 22:06

yes got the nitty gritty and untill recently swore by it too but either dd (or me) is getting new ones every day or its missing some.

i wish you were here too. dh is rubbish, a quick look and 'you're fine'. i like looking too and love squishing the little things. i spent so long checking tonight SD fell asleep!

No idea about BF but I got Hedrin (to use on DD1) when I was pg. It's the one you have to keep on for 8 hours/overnight. It doesn't have any pesticides in it - it smothers the buggers (apparently - currently on day 8 of nit-quest so hoping they're gone). I'm paranoid about me having got them too - my DH just had a quick root around in my hair and declared it fine but I'm not so sure as the ones on DD1's hair were quite difficult to spot initially.

thanks ill have a look at hedrin. lyclear is good but says to consult doc if bf or pg

The best thing to use is original listerine mouthwash and cover with a shower cap leave for two hours then wash out. I was suspicious as first but had tried everything but it really works you have to comb eggs out still.

Matildarae · 08/07/2012 20:12

Also I am pregnant and used listerine on myself

mumnosbest · 08/07/2012 20:44

wow the things ive learnt on MN! im not even going to ask how you discovered this. ive straightened my hair today in the hope ive singed anything.

I've recently discovered that eggs were way smaller than I realised.
Combs don't actually comb anything out apart from the live lice and only then it's tricky.
The eggs are attached with a cement -like compound and each one has to be pulled off.

DH did one DC and I did the other. He missed loads and I had to re-do her on a nightly basis.

lesstalkmoreaction · 09/07/2012 10:26

Wet comb and pick any live buggers out with tweezers, squeeze till they pop.
Its so enjoyable, such a shame none of mine have had any for a couple of years now.
I do remember being admitted to hospital while pregnant and constantly throwing up and also having nits, not one of my better days!!

mumnosbest · 09/07/2012 12:52

thanks. ive cleared dds head. popped the live ones and sceaped out the eggs. dsis removed what she thought could be eggs from my hair but couldnt find any live ones which i find odd. im still itching like crazy!
