Has anyone had a stress fracture?

If so did you go for the surgical or conservative solution to have it fixed.
I have a fracture of the 4th metatarsal due to a deformity of my foot, being overweight and doing lots of walking.
I have been offered a boot/ cast for 8-10 weeks to see if it heals or surgery with plates and bone grafts with 5-6 weeks in a cast.
I know i'll be in a cast/boot for longer but I'll be a lot more mobile with the conservative treatment. I have 4 kids to get to school, 2 dogs to walk , a husband that works long hours and no family nearby to help me.

I had a broken metatarsal a few years ago. It was plastered and mended well in 6 weeks although there was a further period of about a fortnight when it was painful after the cast was taken off. Back to running again a week or so after that. It was a pita for the 6 weeks, I was able to work from home, got neighbours to take kids to school, had to let housework slip a little. I've had no problems with that foot at all since then.

My fracture is an old one, across a callus from and old surgical site. It's trying to heal, but just can't seem to get there by itself.
