What do you do about a stomach bug?

Ds went on a school trip on Friday to an outdoorsie place (canoes, rock climbing, raft building etc). Unfortunately, he fell in the water a few times. I gave him cola when I collected him, but the D&V started on Sunday morning (3am), he didn't have a temperature. He stopped vomiting on Monday, but still has loose poop, occasional stomach pain, a headache and a little fatigue. I've been treating him with diarylite and lots to drink. He's only really started to eat properly today, and I've kept him off school, I'm just wondering if I can do anything else before I manage to get him an appointment with the GP?

I don't think you need to do anything other than that - rest, liquids, food if he's hungry, not even GP - it'll just go in a couple of days. If it doesn't, then do GP.

Thank you. I think they should have given out information on what to do if your child is ill after going on the trip. There's all sorts of nasties in the water. He's been carrying the sick bucket around with him, it's become a permanent attachment (even though he hasn't been sick since Monday).

I feel bad now for sounding as though i know what i'm talking about. That's just what I would do, but I might be totally neglectful...

I'd do the same as MrsCornish. Some D&V bugs take longer to go than others, nurse told me they tend to take longer to go in the summer and not to worry when this happened last year.

No, don't feel bad. I don't want to spread it around or waste the GP's time. He does seem OK, I'm not sure what to do to help with the stomach pain though.

Hi OP, did you take your DS to the GP?

No. I called them, they told me not to take him anywhere! The doctor called at lunch time so I discussed it with him. He said if it hasn't cleared up by Wednesday I should take in a sample, but it's likely to be either salmonella or campalobacter (no idea how to spell this).

or cryptosporidium possibly. He can't tell until they have a sample.
