bleeding between periods and quite concerned - TMI alert

Since friday I've noticed a spot or a smear of blood every time I've gone to loo and have to wear a panty liner. It's two weeks after my last period and i never get bleeding inbetween. No chance that I'm pregnant.

I've also got a few dull aches around kidneys and tummy and have been very bloated recently.

Have appointment at 2.30 with GP. What sort of tests will she order? Or will she ask me to wait and see.

I know i'm hysterical but I'm worried it might be cervical cancer - ok that is massive catastrophising so come and give me a slap and some good advice please

Good luck - would expect maybe a vaginal ultra-sound and a smear.

There are many things it could be and cervical cancer is very treatable when caught early so stop torturing yourself with disaster scenarios!

GooseyLoosey · 04/07/2012 14:00

Should have said, don't go for the wait and see option. Push for something to be done now.

LateDeveloper · 04/07/2012 17:00

Thanks Goosey. Back from gp. She took a smear, had a feel (oo-er) and I can call for results on Monday.

Should I ask about a vaginal ultra-sound even if smear is clear or would that be completely over the top?

Her advice was "probably nothing worrying but good to check and we'll take it step by step.

Glad you're getting it checked out. Could be polyp/s. I had those symptoms and was referred for an ultrasound/vaginal ultrasound where they found 2 polyps. After they were removed, the spotting and light bleeding between periods stopped. Could also be endometriosis. I think it's natural to jump to worse-case scenarios, but think your GP is right when she things it's nothing worrying but to take it step by step.

Thanks poppedout. Glad you were fixed - I now actively want polyps!!!

I already feel calmer today cos I know I'm doing what I can to get it checked out at the moment.

Was good to write it down as I don't want my rl friends to know I'm a big hyochrondriac wuss

I had similair problems, It felt like a never ending cycle of 2 weeks on, w week of spotting, 1 week ok then repeat, my GP was useless and kept telling me it was hormons and I needed to go on the pill, I moved house and had to change gps, she was fantastic and took me seriously and I've just been diagnosed with an under-active thyroid, have been on treatment for 2 months and have just had a normal period that lasted 4 days with no spotting.

I know its worrying but your drs right to say take it one step at a time as it probably has a simple explanation that can be easily treated.

Let us know how you get on Late.

Hi, i am 43 and last year i bled for a month very heavily, it was discovered that i had a polyp..a large one. It was removed via surgery, and they did a D&C too. My periods were lighter and lasted 3 days to start with after previously being 7 days long. Now almost a year on i went to have a coil fitted only to tell the nurse that i had one breakthrough bleed, which was a wk after my normal period but just as intense. They sent me for a scan only to find yet another Polyp. This time i am having strong cramps most days and yet not much breakthrough (only once). I have now been booked in for a second op..Cervical Ablation this time to rid the problem once and for all as Specialist Dr Michael Bowen said that they will most likely just keep coming back. I have had previous years of breakthrough bleeding which was also related to an Cervical Ectropian (where the inside of the cervix protrudes at the end leaving red fresh cells which bleed when touched..eg during sex). I had bled on and off for about 7 yrs after sex so during my last op that was treated too. SO it could be either of these issues perhaps. Good Luck tho. Cervical Polyps are Benign ..non cancerous!

deliasniff · 08/07/2012 00:40

I get spotting between periods every couple of years and it frightened me a lot the first time it happened. With me it's an infection that needs to be treated with anti biotics, the nurse said it was a variation of thrush and is quite common.

LateDeveloper · 09/07/2012 16:50

Well I called for my results just now and got message that swabs were all ok

bleeding has stopped too so perhaps it was just one of those things?

if it was an infection or cancer the swab could have picked this up I guess?

Zara - might have to have sex to see whether that is the cause as last bleed started a couple of days after sex.

Thanks for handholding and advice - will come back if anything else occurs

Glad results were clear x

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 09/07/2012 23:13

Yes, I'm glad to hear that too Late. Hope it was just one of those things. I'm sure if your GP was concerned they'd refer you for a scan.

LateDeveloper · 18/07/2012 15:52

well I started having spotting again a day or so after we had sex. it went on for five days before my period came.

The message from reception was that the results came back clear but I realise I'm not sure what they were testing for. Results came in three days so could only have been a test for infection i presume?

Not sure whether i need to contact gp again as i don't want to be seen as fussing and she didn't say to come back in again.
