PMT, is this normal? Can anything be done?

I have pmt that I would say is at a debilitating level now. A week before my period I become incredibly tired and short tempered, about 3 days before I could cry and never stop, become overly sensitive and increasingly anxious.

I am recovering from depression and panic/anxiety and for 3wks every month I feel ok, then the pmt hits and it pulls me down to leave a mess. I'm already on fluoxetine but after a discussion with my mum she and I think this can't be a normal reaction.

I think I was less hormonal when I was pregnant! Any one else like this or got any suggestions?

Have you spoken to your doctor? You shouldn't have to go through that every month.

Haven't been to see my dr in 3mths she just puts them on repeat prescription and said there's no need for me to go in? Is this wrong?

Is there anything else your doctor could give you instead that would help with the pmt?

I don't know if it's normal but I feel like this more and more lately (age related? am 39 myself). Really exhausted and worn out, angry and really irritable. Would love to hear if anyone has found a 'cure'.

The cure for me was levothyroxine, for an underactive thyroid. I had v debilitating pmt, heavy periods plus a lot of other symptoms like anxiety, problems sleeping and extreme cold. Simple thyroid test. Maybe also ask for a hormone test?

What dose of fluoxetine are you on?

cupcake78 · 05/07/2012 06:18

20mg, my anxiety is sky high at the moment. I'm on day 3 of my period, yesterday I just couldn't cope with it all tears most of the day it didn't settle till teatime.

It sounds like fluoxetine isn't right for you.

I was put on fluoxetine for pmt, on 20mg and it made a huge difference to me. And I mean huge.

If I were you I'd get an appointment with the dr and ask for something different.

I know exactly how you feel as I was the same and you can't be expected to live like that when it effects you and those around you so much. Let us know how you get on x

I'm going to drs next wed, period day 4 and I'm not too bad have had a few dips and woke up very anxious but nothing like the last few mornings. could have cried a few times but ds been with me so held it together.

I'm a bit sick of being a woman at the moment.

Do ask for blood tests when you see the GP, I have a similar issue and still trying to get a solution. My Vit D levels were low and others have suggested that this could be a factor. I'm on high strength evening primrose which might lessen symptoms but hasn't been a cure. My PMS has got considerable worse as I've got older.

underthemountain · 06/07/2012 19:36

I have been wondering about vitamin D too. Dark gloomy days certainly don't help my mood.
