Norethisterone (or similar) - your experiences please. I'm considering asking GP about it.

Hi folks.

I'm due to go on holiday in three weeks just when my period is due. It will be an active holiday with not great access to loos at times, so I'm thinking of asking the GP for Norethisterone or similar to delay my period.

Some info on me - 47 year old, obese, in good heath (other than being obese), periods regular and moderately heavyish with some cramps, not on any other medication. Just in case any of that is relevant to any considerations to do with period delay meds.

So I'd be interested to hear of your experiences of Norethisterone (or similar meds) - did it work for you, and did you get any side effects. I've heard that when you get your period after using it cramps can be bad?

Thanks

I've used norethisterone lots of times for holidays. Start it about 3 days before period is due to start and have to take it 3 times a day until you get back home. I have had no problems or side effects, period sometimes slightly heavier but hardly noticeable. Only difficulty is remembering to take it 3 times a day!

I too have used it as periods are heavy and no good for holidays! Works well for that, but I do tend to get a very heavy period when I stop taking it( about 3 or 4 days later)

I'm 50, slightly overweight but fairly fit, and have used it a couple of times in the last six months due to heavy periods clashing with holidays. I didn't have any side effects and my period afterwards was no heavier than usual. I wish I'd discovered it earlier!

I am 40 and have heavy periods, I've taken norothisterone a few times. It makes me quite moody, like pmt, and then I do get a heavier period. But it works very well and the side effects are far better than getting a period - I would definitely recommend it.

Glad I found this. My gp wants me to try norethisterone as I am 48 have fibroids and awful heavy painful periods. Tranexamic acid does help but still get the horrible flooding. Have read lots of negative stuff on norethisterone and was scared to give it a go. Meant to take it days 14 - 27, so if anyone else uses it like this every month please let me know.
