Hi

Posted a few days ago about dd drinking and weeing a lot and my suspicions were confirmed, she is diabetic.

Have been in and out of hospital all weekend, and things seem very wierd at the moment, we are trying to adjust to this news.

Her b/m was 30 when she was admitted and the nurse said she was amazed she was so lively!

Would love to talk to you or anyone else with diabetic kids for reassurance and advice etc!

Hi lily.
I've been told diabtetics are no more likely to catch colds and bugs than anyone else, but obviously it's more complicated when they do.

Sorry to hear about your dd's asthma. I didn't realise she has that too. I have asthma and it's a drag. However, touch wood, I seem to have grown out of it recently and I think it was linked to giving up dairy.

My ds's readings have been really high lately, probably because he has some kind of cold which he's having trouble shifting. I've been giving him the odd unit or two of Novorapid to get his count down which seems to work a treat. The 'team' are cautiously supportive iykwim, but I think we have to find our own way.

My ds's insulin is going to be changed. It's the same, aparently, but unlike with the Mixtard he won't have to wait 20 mins before he can eat, which should make things easier.

Is your dd on Mixard? I can't remember.

Sorry for the infrequency of my posts lily but I've started work and so have very little time to MN. Sadly. I'll send you my email address so you can feel free to contact me any time.

I hope you're all well. xx

Lilly MN won't let me CAT you for some reason. They say they can't find a user with your name.
Feel free to CAT me.

Hi, I know this thread is a bit old now but I'm hoping spidermama or lillypink might see this (or anyone else with experience in this).
I think that my ds might have diabetes; everything is pointing towards that and I have to take him for some tests next week.

Could anyone tell me exactly how they test for it (is it a urine test?) and how long it takes for a result? Also, what's the procedure afterwards?

Thanks in advance, would be grateful for any advice.

Hi Rabbitrabbit
I've had type 1 since i was 9 so might be able to help. Assuming your son isn't too ill they'll probably due a urine test to see if glucose in the urine, just like they do with pregnant women and the doc will give you the results of that there and then. If there is sugar in the water they'll do a blood test which they send to the lab but results usually back pretty quickly.

If he's really ill as i was they skipped the blood test and admitted me straight away as they were 99% sure with symptoms (i drank 4 X 2litre bottles of pop in the space of a morning!!)

Hope everything's ok - let us know

Thanks paddyclamp, just saw your reply.
We're off to the docs at 4.30 so am keeping everything crossed (ouch) in the hope that it isn't.

paddyclamp · 26/11/2006 22:30

Hey how did it go?

Spidermama · 09/12/2006 21:13

Hello Paddyclamp.
I know your last post was sometime ago but I wonder how you got on with your ds. I hope it wasn't diabetes but if it was and you'd like to contact me, feel free.

Spidermama · 09/12/2006 23:48

Sorry that last post should have been addressed to rabitrabit. How's your ds RR? I hope you're all doing OK. x
