Name changed because this is embarrassing!

I had a sudden stomach pain, followed by the feeling that my insides were falling out. I popped to the toilet, felt a lump and then found a gross looking tampon. I finished my period 4 days ago, so it's clearly been there a while. Had a particularly unpleasant 7 day heavy period - very crampy and was struggling to insert tampons, so wondering how long it's been there.

Really not sure what to do! I haven't felt great lately but no particularly new symptoms to my usual autoimmune collection of symptoms.

Depending on several things, you may need to be seen by out of hours GP...

Do you have
-High temperature
-Nausea / vomiting
-Abdominal pain
-Unusual vaginal bleeding / discharge
-Diarrhoea
-A rash

If no to all of the above, safe to wait and make contact with your GP tomorrow for further advice. Any or all of the above, call Out of Hours.

If the tampon has may have been there since the period a month ago, I would get checked out. Toxic shock syndrome is rare but real.
Do you have a temp?

TheMonster · 24/06/2012 17:03

It's good that it's come out. How do you feel?

Elibean · 24/06/2012 17:04

You'll probably be fine (happened to me once, and fwiw the nice GP said it was surprisingly - or not surprisingly - common!) but I'd agree with Soozy. If you have symptoms as below, call out of hours. Otherwise, phone and speak to GP tomorrow Smile

I've had abdominal pain and slight diarrhoea but I have IBS, so it's not unusual for me. No temperature. I planned to call my GP tomorrow but wasn't sure if it should wait.

I have done this before and saw gynae. I ended up with an infection. I cannot believe I've been so stupid again. I'm sure I'm fine but just needed some reassurance. I'll live till tomorrow morning, I hope!

It's happened to me too and is very common so you shouldn't feel embarrassed.
I went to the GP as I was also feeling unwell and had nasty discharge. Ended up on antibiotics which sorted everything out.
As others have already posted, would recommend you go and see your GP to get checked over.

In the absence of a high temp, and no unusual symptoms then I'd say wait until tomorrow.... but if anything changes or worsens before the surgery opens then call OOH. If you have the same system as us, you will be triaged by a Nurse or Doctor and they will decide if you need to be seen tonight.

Thanks again for the reassurance. I was sure I'd be ok but my friend worried me. Last time I share my problems with her!
