Appendix, mid cycle pain, something else?? Any experience of either?

Keeping it brief, on friday night suddenly I started getting pain low down on my right hand side, buy Sat lunchtime it was still as bad so I went to the out of hours. After 2 urine tests they thought appendicitis and sent me to A&E.

They ran some other tests (blood, urine, x-rays, temp, pule and BP) and sent me to a surgical ward to be prepped for appendix removal. After a few hours on a drip and pain killers they thought wait and see how I was overnight, but was ready to go to surgery at any time.

By morning as I hadn't deteriorated drastically it was then thought I might have an ovarian cyst, so I was sent for an ultrasound, then more blood and urine tests.

Results for scan showed all my insides looked fine but my appendix couldn't really be seen but there was some extra fluid which might or might not indicate appendicitis.

Saw the consultant later on sunday night who said that my white cell count was down, as was my temp and pulse, so they were now between grumbling appendix and sever mid cycle pain as I was right in the middle of my cycle. So I was sent home on instruction to go straight to A&E if it got worse.

So here I am, no worse and no better and on day 5, feeling really fed up. Was wondering of anyone has suffered from really bad mid cycle pain that has lasted this long and what it felt like? Or similarly if anyone had grumbling appendix that lasted a while then just disappeared?

I am due to go on holiday in 2 weeks time with only my DD and I am worried about that too.

If anyone had any experience of either condition and could offer advice, it'd be much appreciated.

Oh you poor thing. Not sure what a grumbling appendix means but it sounds miserable. Is it worth going to your GP today, explaining the situation and asking for advice? Have you got a temp at the moment?

Sorry haven't got any practical experience for you but have my sympathies and a Brew

I had something similar happen to me and ended up having a laparoscopy (sp) keyhole surgery where they take a look with a camera. I have two tiny scars one on my belly button and one under pubic hair. It turned out to be endiometriosis (sp) in the end.

Thanks both don't think I have a temp but have been taking paracetamol regularly which would maybe be bringing it down, despite not helping with pain.

I think I am going to head back to the hospital this morning. I've phoned my mum to ask her if she can come and be with dd so I can go.

Phoned her crying pathetically, feel bad as she has work etc but feel like I can't sit about like this for another day doing nothing.

Mid cycle pain as you have described can be indicative of endometriosis being present. Endo can be mistaken for other things like appendicitis or IBS.

Were you actually seen by a gynaecologist?.

Yes I have. Last september I was making tea one morning when I suddenly had very very bad stabby pain in the lower right side. It lasted about 30 mins and then eased off a bit, but I lasted 4 days before going to the doctor (thurs). He said it was probably a small ovarian cyst and then rang me the following monday during which time i codeined up. I said it was a bit better (don't like doctors!) and then the next day I got my period so felt very stupid. The next month the same thing happened again. I didn't do anything as presumed that it was going to be period again but after 2 weeks and no period I was really fed up. However I was also about to fly to the US for a conference and didn't want to invalidate my insurance Hmm so just put up with it and after about another week and a half my period duly turned up. It has happened every time since then (has never happened before and I'm 36) although i have a hospital appointment tomorrow to try and sort it out Grin. I think it is just a cyst acting up but sounds more bearable than yours Sad. I hope you get some answers.

Hello,
In January I had bad abdominal pain, that started by belly button then went to lower right, was being sick, had high temp, raised pulse, hot and cold, clammy. Called on call doc in middle of night, I explained my current health problems, plus the new symptoms. They called an ambulance. At hospital they were unsure what going on. Had blood tests, immflammation and white cells were up, and a scan which they couldnt see appendix but could see a lot of fluid, so they did key hole surgery, took my appendix out and also noticed a cyst had burst.

*adding to that, I was late for my period

Hi weirdscience - sounds like the beginnings of chronic appendicitis. I had a very similar experience a few weeks ago.

Woke up with moderate, central abdominal pain which persisted for several hours. Decided to go to local walk in centre as it was a weekend and the pain although unpleasant wasn't severe.

Urine test showed blood and nurse suggested a kidney stone and sent me off to A&E. Pain increased considerably and settled in right side, temp spiked and I vomited once. However all bloods and ultrasound showed negative for infection and inflammation.

Doctors seemed puzzled so kept me in over night and gave me morphine. The next day felt pretty well apart from discomfort in my right side which felt like I had been kicked by a horse. Was told probably grumbling appendix but would just have to wait and see - discharged with tramadol.

Since then have felt a bit off but nothing as severe. Like you I feel a bit in limbo now and just hope it doesn't go acute whilst we are on holiday in France.

Hope you feel better soon or at least find out what's causing the pain.

I'm very similar - didn't post straight off because mine hasn't resolved so is more in sympathy than advice! I started with mid back pain in March. I had a week of antibiotics for a suspect uti but it didn't help. A week later my GP admitted me for suspected appendicitis - sound familiar?! because I was feverish and had right sided abdo pain - lower than the back pain. My temp was always up but never spiked above 38.1.Negative urine dip in hospital, ultrasound and CT abdo didn't show anything. Bloods never showed any infection markers. Disharged after a week with a ?ascending uti/?kidney stones diagnosis. Differnwy docs thought different things! More antibiotics, not much better! Gradually improved over few weeks with paracetamol, codiene and buscopan (helps with the spasms). Got worse / more antibiotics, felt better. Went back to work. A week later, just as bad again. I'm now waiting for a urology referral to try and work out what's going on!
Here's what's helping: the medicine as above, regularly rather than as and when, drinking lots of water - at least 2 litres a day, warm baths. I'm trialling drinking cranberry juice.
Here's what makes it worse: excess caffeine, fizzy drinks, alcohol.

I'll keep you posted if I get my appointment and get any clues on what's going on! Or if I find a magic cure.... Don't carry on in agony though. I have repeatedly gone to my doctors until I got something done.

HaveALittleFaith · 25/06/2012 18:00

Hi just thought I'd see how you were and give you an update from me.
I've been to see a urologist who thinks my symptoms are being caused by blockage in my urinary tract and occasionally backs up to my kidney. I'm going for a day case op to have a look up my pipes (!) and hopefully remove the blockage.
I hope you're feeling better and got to the root of the problem.
