I drink too much coffee during the day. Will my thyroxine be more effectibe if I take it at bedtime?

Thyroxine acts on the body very slowly - I don't think it matters when you take it as long as you take it regularly. The thing to keep away from thyroxine are iron supplements, so if you take those, take them at least 2 hours away from the thyroxine. HTH.

if you have thin hair due to low iron, not sure spatone has enough iron in it to fix that.... www.anemia.org/patients/feature-articles/content.php?contentid=000316 sorry, don't know how to do links! There is a connection with anaemia and thyroid function, so if you are new to thyroxine you might find that once you have been on it for a while, everything improves. You still need to get the iron levels back up by supplementing, but then going forward they have less chance of dropping again IFSWIM. Good luck!

I've been told the best time to take thyroxine is at night to reduce any interactions.

HazleNutt · 11/06/2012 13:46

One of my doctors told me to take it first thing in the morning, at least half an hour before breakfast. The other said it does not matter, as long as you take it the same time every day, as most important is to keep the levels constant.
Some studies do indeed show that coffee affects thyroxine absorption, especially if you drink it with milk or cream, so taking it at night might be better for you.

From my own experience, I need at least an hour between coffee and thyroxine.

Also, milk can affect the absorption of thyroxine into the body so it may be worth experimenting and finding out what works best for you.
