badly bruised, when will it get better?

I slipped and fell backwards heavily onto some sharp tiled stairs on Saturday. Fainted afterwards and went off to A+E in an ambulance which was all hideous, (had morphine and was very sick..uggh). But the upshot is the x-ray was fine and there was no blood in my urine so Doc said its just badly bruised. It is right over one kidney and hurts like hell. I would say its about as painful as post c-section which seems bonkers as nothing has been cut or broken. I am hobbling slowly about but getting up from chairs or in and out of bed is really painful. I'm taking paracetamol . Was a bit wary of the co-codamol they gave me as I was so sick and faint. How long does this sort of thing take to get better? DH has tons of work at the moment, it is not a good time to be laid up!

bumping in hope!

How are you feeling now? I fell over a couple of weeks ago and bashed my leg on the edge of a drawer. It still hurts a lot, and I have been wondering the same thing about how long it will take to heal.

hellymelly · 09/06/2012 22:03

I feel pretty rough still actually. To the point that I was pondering if they'd missed something on the x-ray, but the doc seemed to have had a good look at it at the time. It just hurts such a lot still and I can't walk other than slowly, creeping into bed hurts, everything. I suppose I could be taking more painkillers, I'm not on the max dose of paracetamol,I'm taking two or three doses a day. It is a wee bit easier getting up stairs today though, so it is improving, just very slowly.
How badly bruised is your leg?

perplexedpirate · 09/06/2012 22:12

I fell over onto tiled stairs about ten years ago and I still have a big dint where the muscle was damaged. Ruined my previously perfectly nice bum. Sad
I would go back to the GP if you still worried. Just to be on the safe side.

MousyMouse · 09/06/2012 22:17

it should get better after a couple of days. rest plenty, use ice packs to reduce the swelling, drink plenty.
if it doesn't get better in a couple of days or gets worse go back. sometimes breaks only show on x-ray later, especially when the bone's skin is not broken.

hellymelly · 09/06/2012 22:24

Oh perplexed! that is making me wince. Its been a week now. I did see a GP this week as the pain was so bad. He just hummed and haaed and said it was very badly bruised. Mousey now I'm scared that I need another x-ray. I had a really dreadful time in the A+E it was like a nightmare. Bruise is large and black, getting yellower, how can I tell if I need another x-ray? ( they were checking my spine, so one would think they'd be thorough. Am not sure if they x-rayed all my pelvis. (bruise is over one kidney).

wonkylegs · 09/06/2012 22:27

It can take a while for even bruising to heal... Depends how serious it is.
When I bruised myself badly falling heavily on my hip it took approx. 2 weeks for the soreness to die down (although it got progressively better with time) and about another 5 days to visibly disappear.
When I fell and bruised the bone in my kneecap it took 18mths to heal Sad but dr said that was normal.
Both times I got them checked out by dr after a week to make sure I hadn't done some serious damage.

wonkylegs · 09/06/2012 22:28

Getting yellower means it's healing

MousyMouse · 09/06/2012 22:29

yellowing is good, that means your body is breaking down the blood from the internal bleeding. have you been refered to the fracture clinic? maybe ask the gp about that or call the hospital if tou can self refer. after a week you really should feel a difference pan wise.

hellymelly · 09/06/2012 22:31

No I wasn't ref'd to the fracture clinic as all looked ok on the x-ray. Its just that the pain is a bit of a surprise given that nothing is cut or broken. I had my urine re-dipped yesterday and it was clear, no blood.

MousyMouse · 09/06/2012 22:41

when I had a broken foot I just self refered.
accident happend on holiday abroad and the x-ray only showed an old break (I didn't even know about). I knew something wasn't quite right and the gp' receptionist told me just to call the fracture clinic to make an appointment. x-ray week after accident showed a break.

MousyMouse · 09/06/2012 22:42

oh, another thing, the physio told me that breaks are usually not very painfull for long, but the soft tissue injury is much worse and takes long to heal.

hellymelly · 09/06/2012 22:46

oh, ok- maybe its just that its a bad bash then. I may go back to the GP on Monday. The nearest A+E is an hour away and Sunday would be a bad time to go anyway I imagine.

perplexedpirate · 10/06/2012 01:42

Mine went every colour imaginable. At one point my arse looked like a particularly spectacular sunset.
Get thee to your GP on Monday.

jubilucket · 10/06/2012 01:45

One thing I've noticed is that as I grow older, bruises last longer. Hope yours heals soon OP.

hellymelly · 11/06/2012 12:42

Bruise fading well, more yellow than blue or black on it now. Still hurts a lot though, i am needing painkillers every day. I wonder how long it will take to get better completely?
