... holds the arm away from the body? i have a very painful dropped shoulder which may have some weird dislocation thing going on
but need a sling that would act a bit like a holding a cushion under my arm.

can i buy such a thing?

i need something to help me over the next few days till i see a specialist.

You can - like this, but I'm not sure you'd be able to go into a shop and buy one

You could try physioroom. They have a big range of splints/braces/slings etc. I've ordered a few things from them and they were good to deal with - good returns policy, delivery etc.
