I know this sounds pathetic but they are on my tongue, my gums and inside my lips. It hurts to talk, eat and is waking me up during the night. I'm gargling with salt water, have upped my vitamin intake and they just keep coming. This happens to me at least once every couple of months and they can last upto 2 weeks. Dentist has no answers for me. What can I do?

If it's happening regularly, I wonder if it's an allergic reaction to something, typically toothpaste. My mouth ulcers cleared up when I started using Zendium toothpaste.

Or it could be a virus, and you could be run down. You should go to the GP to get checked out.

Oh and it's not patheticSmile

Buddhastic · 23/05/2012 09:03

Thanks for replying Belgo. Have changed my toothpaste and have a natural one with no SLS in it but thats not helped. I have also tried homeopathic treatments to boost my immune system, cut down sugar, accupuncture and am currently chewing fresh mint to try and get some relief. I am off to the Doctor tomorrow but I really don't know what she will be able to do as I've been before and nothing seems to help. She did suggest a food allergy test but it costs over 300pounds so I was hoping I wouldnt have to go there.

I recommend Corsodyl mouthwash. It tastes absolutely vile, but if you start using it as soon as you feel an ulcer starting, it stops it growing and stops any more coming. You can use it twice a day as a preventative measure, but it tastes so strong I only use it once I feel an ulcer coming, and then use it for a few days.

YourFanjoIsNotAHandbag · 23/05/2012 09:12

Yy to the mouthwash, my ds1 used to get ulcers every month, since using it we have been ulcer free for the past 6 months

Reenypip · 23/05/2012 11:21

Hi,
I've had recurrent mouth ulcers since I was a little girl. My record is 16 ulcers at one time, and my average is about 8 at a time.
They can be anywhere, inside lips, guns, inside cheeks, throat, tongue.
I use to go to dental hospital for research and investigations when I was a child. Everything we tried didn't work, so got discharged. This was 10 years ago (I'm
Now 25). I haven't gone back I just live and deal with them.

Reenypip · 23/05/2012 11:24

The first advice I was ever given, was avoid tomato sauce, tomatoes, spicy food, high sugar contented items. It made absolutely no difference. Tried everything.
They said could be hormone related. But they didn't really have any idea.

havingabath · 23/05/2012 11:30

Dh had these since little. Huge, multiple anywhere in the mouth. No solutions via Gp or dentist, used corsodyl daily...

Started with a supplement of l-lysine and vit b complex and is now ulcer free! If he forgets the first supplement they ate back within a few days but if he restarts they go quickly, this is unprecedented as they always had to get give before healing before.

This has been working for well over twelve months, can't recommend if enough:)

Buddhastic · 23/05/2012 13:26

Thanks for your replies. The Doctor gave me Corsodyl last time I went but it didn't work. I have Pernicious Anaemia so it maybe something to do with that although my levels are fairly stable. I have been googling like mad and thats the second time I've saw something on l-lysine so I'm off to the health shop and am hoping that will do the trick. I will check back in and let you know if I've had any luck. Reenypip have you ever tried lysine?

I think we found it by Googling...has been amazing.

NedSchneebly · 23/05/2012 13:55

Try Difflam? - I get mouth ulcers with chemotherapy, and difflam what the hospital give me. Works well for me.

Reenypip · 23/05/2012 21:03

I've never tried lysine.
Mouth wash wise, corsodyl and difflam didn't stop, reduce or get rid of the ulcers, it just kept them clean and difflam can numb it slightly but for me not significant enough and only for a very short period.

fridayfreedom · 23/05/2012 21:07

was going to say , have you been tested for vitamin B12 deficiency? but then you said you have pernicious anaemia. My Dad had that and he used to get mouth fulls of ulcers until he started having Vit B12 injections

Dollydowser · 23/05/2012 21:25

I would try the Lysine supplement, it works incredibly well on cold sores so see no reason why it wouldn't work for ulcers too.

chrome · 23/05/2012 21:29

Oraldene is a cheap solution and can be bought in Boots. Its the only thing that works for me.

TheFarSide · 23/05/2012 21:31

I get ulcers from sorbitol which is in toothpaste and mints, or if I use an electric toothbrush too much. I have switched to Sensodyne toothpaste which makes a big difference for me. I see you have changed to a natural toothpaste - I assume that means sorbitol free (I don't know what SLS is)?

Buddhastic · 24/05/2012 12:28

Thanks everyone. Well I thought I'd tried everything and i was 'doomed' to suffer but I went to the health shop and bought 'havingabath's' suggestion. Within two hours the pain lessened and I could talk again. This morning, ulcers are still there but its like they've had the sore bits sucked out. I am so happy! I still went to my Doc's who has ordered further tests as I should know why I get them. Think there is an underlying stomach issue which is not unusual with PA. But thank-you, thank-you I officially love 'havingabath'. Thanks

Great that it has helped, it has been fabulous for dh. I was always amazed by the huge family of angry ulcers he could crop at any minute. He thinks it is a miracle ... Got a good wife award for suggesting it and now flowers too:)

Incidentally some people take it for digestive issues also.

Kbear · 27/05/2012 16:43

I am suffering with mouth ulcers at the moment too - I imagine they are stress related.. I bought mouth ulcer gel - useless.... Corsodyl.... not much improvement, today I bought IGLU and it is very much like the Adcortyl in Orabase which they stopped making (I even asked the doctor and pharmacist what was similar to it and they didn't know). I was over the moon.

So I am going to by Lysine and vitamin b complex but in the meantime the Iglu is at least allowing me to eat something. The mouth ulcer diet is very boring.
