just wondering...all full of this crappy fluey bug, dh gone to work left me wit 2 very upset, snotty and ill kiddies. Been chucking up myself etc etc...anyway i digress I know that you can give calpol from 2mths but can you give medised as think dd [9wks 11lbs] needs something to clear up the snot as she is chucking up her milk with it. Have tried saline drops and its not helping. I know it is 2.5mls of calpol so can I give 2.5mls of medised??????

no they have to be 2 unless a gp prescribes it. Just looked online for you and forgot to link it.

alliep30 · 18/02/2006 12:33

i wouldn't to be honest.. it's quite strong. gives my dd who is 1 a hangover

hermykne · 18/02/2006 12:34

Nemo1977 · 18/02/2006 12:34

I'd go for 2mls (I don't know how much difference the 0.5 would make, but it just makes me feel better ).

Mercy · 18/02/2006 12:35

It says from 3 months on the box.

Nemo1977 · 18/02/2006 12:35

I looked at the bottle too - definately says from 3 months, and I have a feeling I was told to give it to DD at about that age too (doctor told, not random old lady in street)

mykidsmum · 18/02/2006 12:36

I really wouldn't do it, not sure a gp would prescribe it either

MarsOnLife · 18/02/2006 12:37

sorry honey... must have been a funny site. Just read it through quickly and strangely I don't have any in the cupboard.

alliep30 · 18/02/2006 12:37

or you can try olbas bath.. when lo is in baby bath, fill the main bath around so vapours work, but doesn't touch their skin

mykidsmum · 18/02/2006 12:37

sorry you all feeling crap btw

Nemo1977 · 18/02/2006 12:39

ok thanks all...just wondered because of the calpol etc saying 3mths plus but they give it from 2mths.
I must admit I tend to only use it for ds if he is as bad as he is today. Feel sorry for DD not being able to have anything

alliep30 · 18/02/2006 12:42

that's how it should be! everything stuck together with snot

OK.... this is the way i look at it.... having spoken in detail to my uncle who developes / makes / invents drugs and medicines etc....

In order for a medicine to even get a license a slight (or even quite major) error in the way / amount given must not cause seriouse side effects.... even more so for over the counter non prescribed medicines etc...

Medicine is also specific mainly to weight (which is why if you are in hospital etc the like to know your weight) and looking at it another way, at vets they weigh the pet and give X amount per KG etc

They just do it by age as thats an "easy" way of describing how to do it!

Therefor in order for medised to even have its license for a 3 month old baby it would have to be safe for a baby on about the 1st percentile (or smaller!) to recieve an overdose without seriouse consequences

Given that you baby is just a few weeks away from this milestone i would imagine it would be VERY unlikely to do harm (or else it would not be allowed to be on sale in the 1st place!)

Most of the guidelines etc are to cover their own backs etc....

so as long as the child was of the size as a small 3 month old, i personally would give some medised to him (the 3 month one obviously, there are 2 versions , one from 3 months, the other from 2 years)

I would however only do thise for MY OWN child before any one questions me doing this as a nanny!!!!!!!
