Awful smelling wind, bloating and grumbling tummy?

I have had for the last week or two the most dreadfully foul smelling wind, my stomach has been bloated [cant wear my jeans] and im currently listening to my stomach growl.

Ive always been a bit 'windy' but this is just beyond.

I woke myself up a few nights ago as the stench was sooo bad!

The children are laughing at me, im laughing along as im really not anal [oh god scuse the pun!] about farts but I was wondering if its actually a problem?

I just googled and there were things about IBS and some other stuff.

Any ideas? should I be concerned? [other than about the ozone layer]

Is it worth seeing my GP?

You could try some charcoal tablets. Have you changed your diet in any way recently?

TerribleWind · 20/05/2012 15:10

Thanks.

Not changed my diet as such, but was trying to think what ive been eating thats different, only thing I can come up with is Taramasalata?

Ive heard about charcoal biscuits a friend was eating them when she had IBS, not sure what they do but id try anything now I think!

Hmm, so likely to not be giardiasis.
Right, I make a crap Gregory House - that was all I had!

Have you been eating more sulphurous foods - eg eggs, or lots of fatty foods?

Essene · 20/05/2012 15:45

It could well be IBS ime everything could be IBS

I have IBS and sometimes get foul smelling wind. It's awful, goes on for a few days, then goes, for no apparent reason.

TerribleWind · 20/05/2012 15:49

No eggs, woukld taramasalata count as fatty? have eaten shitloads!

Essene, what should I do if it is IBS?

There isn't anything you have to do if you aren't feeling too ill iyswim. It certainly isn't life threatening, and I am not sure there is any cure. I only went to the GP because I was convinced I had something wrong with another part of my body (something I have a medical history in iyswim). He reckoned I had IBS, and after various tests (to rule out other conditions) I reluctantly had to agree with him. It isn't really a defined condition itself, rather certain symptoms which don't add up to anything else.

There are various medications you can get for various aspects of IBS but I don't know of one for wind and bloating specifically. I have heard of people taking charcoal tablets, and also peppermint capsules, but I have never tried them myself.

For me, it was less about getting treatment, and more about ruling out other conditions. Most of the time, the symptoms aren't that bad for me to take medications.

Ah ok....maybe buy some pegs for everyones noses and burn some insense then!

I will look for the charcoal stuff.

Thanks for your help

I've had this for the last couple of weeks - absolutely vile smell. One mouthful of gaviscon advance and some semiticon stopped it.

MadreInglese · 20/05/2012 19:32

Are you eating your food very fast and not properly chewing? That causes plenty of stinky wind in our house!

hiddenhome · 21/05/2012 22:58

Cut out wheat and drink a daily Actimel.

Myheadmyworld · 21/05/2012 23:01

Smelly farts as far as I know are caused by meat, eggs or alcohol. I doubt it's taramasalata maybe dodgy or too much meat?

girliefriend · 21/05/2012 23:02

Sounds like Ibs, there are lots of foods that can trigger it so you would prob have to look at your diet and see if anything obvious makes it worse.

Myheadmyworld · 21/05/2012 23:07

I forgot about broccoli, sprouts, lentils, cabbage, beansConfused as long as u get everyone farting with u it should be fine Hmm

hiddenhome · 21/05/2012 23:21

Only wheat does this to me Sad People underestimate how bad wheat is for the gut.
