It aches off and on, but in the last 2 months it aches all the time, even at night.
I dont wear heels.
So is there anything that I could do to improve things?

You may want to see a physio about strengthening your muscles to supporting it better. I had a bit of physio to help with this after smashing my knee 2 yrs ago but mines been limited due to the fact that I also have rheumatoid arthritis (that's partly why I fell and smashed it in the 1st place) but they said it really would of helped if I didn't have the RA. You may be able to get a referral but most NHS ones are very busy so it may be a long wait. You can get private consults quite reasonably but make sure you tell them exactly what happened.

Good I will find a physio.
I did wonder with all the rain it might be the start of arthritis playing up being the wrong, wrong, wrong side of 40.
