Mastitis Question

Has anyone had to have the infection drained? If so what happened and did it hurt?

I was told a week ago that I have mastitis and given antibiotics. Went back today as they haven't helped so was given different antibiotics. Was told though that if it's not any better by Tuesday I'll have to have it drained! The idea made me feel a bit ill so didn't ask for details. Thought I'd ask here instead!

Hi SS!
Poor you. With my first DC I almost constantly had mastitis. It was awful. The GP didnt examine the breast as he didnt want to put me through a personal examination. I wish he had.
Anyway - I had to have it drained. From what I remember (8 yrs ago) they felt where the blockage was and performed an ultra sound. They then put a needle into the affected area and drained all the gunk away. They filled two large syringes - about half a pint- and the relief was immediate. The pressure went! They tested the gunk as there was blood in it. I took antibiotics for 2 wks after and had a follow up check which was fine.
Hope you dont need it but it stopped me feeling pretty rubbish and enjoying my baby.
Good luck

I dont remember pain but the area was painful anyway. I guess putting the needle in hurt a bit but they had numbed it with some cream. It was the pressure that I could feel from the infected area that has stuck with me. And that horrible flu like feeling (cold and shivery) even though it was August. Once it was sorted I felt normal again!! Dont worry and good luck
