Poss urine infection- what should you do before you can get to GP's?

A friend has a DD aged five, who appears to have just developed a urine type infection - needing to go to the toilet all the time and some pain.

Apart from drinking lots of fluids - is there anything else she should be doing before she can get her to the GP's?

any ideas gratefully received

If she has a temperature, her mum may need to use Ibruprofen rather than Calpol to manage it. One of the indications of a UTI is often that Calpol doesn't bring the temp. down for very long.

If she's very unwell (really really high temp.) she must get immediate help, as this could mean she has a kidney infection and prompt use of antibiotics is normally needed to prevent lasting damage to the kidney(s).

Agree with advice about cranberry - even well diluted it really helps my dd.

Should go to the GP asap if this is suspected, the same day, after hours service if necesary.
Take a urine sample with you, this will save you having to make a return trip with one.
Hope she feels better soon

Yes cranberry but make sure it's not had sugar added.

Go to GP asap, if left it could get worse very quickly. Take a sample if possible in a sterilised container. Drink loads of clear fluids.

Chemist should be able to advise. I know they gave me something (not cranberry based, something else) once, which seemed to work.
