Hi I help out at a local nursery and two of the toddlers have worms, now every waking minute is spent thinking about these things, have I got them, will I get them, I do not have an itchy bottom, although I can make this happen if I think about it too long, what are the symptoms and do they do on there own. Thinking about just getting some tablets from a chemist, but what do I ask for and will I do harm if I do not have them. I do not think these adverts for "monsters inside you" are helping. Any help greatly appreciated.

Well you can prevent them just by using good hygiene. Nothing at all to be embarrassed about. As far as I know symptoms are an itchy bum - mostly at night. Just ask your pharmacist for something for worms (Ovex?). Don't think they do any harm if you don't get rid, would just be v uncomfortable.

I agree you can get a one off ovex tablet, won't do any harm and will put your mind at ease!

Thanks to both of you, at least I now know what to ask for.

If a child in the family has them the instructions on Ovex are that everyone in the family should take a tablet.

Sooooooo- if you work closely with children the odds are that you may pick them up- so just de-worm yourself now and then!

When my kids were younger they were often getting worms - from school- and we all took Ovex.

The are incredibly contagious- the eggs are too small to see- so the chances are that anyone working with young children may have worms now and then.

Does the nursery have a policy of informing all parents?

I got worms twice when working as a nanny! Not pleasant!
I could feel the wriggling on a night and was ale to see them with a mirror (TMI sorry!)
If you do have them, I was advised to have a bath every morning, always wear underwear in bed, boil wash all bedding and towels after each use and to take a tablet, follow the hygiene procedures and then take another tablet after 2 weeks to kill off any eggs that remained.
Am shuddering at the memories!!

We have Ovex tablets in the house as DD1 fails to wash her hands is susceptible to them. we all took them the first time, but since then she alone has taken them and we have all been fine, by following basic hygeine rules
