DD says her back is hurting

She is just turned 8 and every now and again (about once every 3-4 months) for as long as I can remember now, she wakes me in the middle of the night to tell me her back is hurting her. She is hunched over and seems to be in real discomfort.

The pain lasts for about an hour and a half and when she was little, she always used to end up being sick. Now she is bigger, the pain suddenly disappears after lots of back rubbing.

I've tried a hot water bottle on her tummy, I've cut out acid drinks (orange and apple juice), fizzy drinks, she has a normal amount of fruit and vegetables (I think), she drinks milk but only a cup before bedtime.

I've taken her to the doctor but he couldn't find anything wrong and said the only other thing he could suggest was to send her to hospital for blood tests. My DD is terrified of this and says she would rather have the pains.

Any ideas?????

Couls it be she sleeps awkwardly sometimes?

rummum · 12/02/2006 23:46

could it be a urine infection??

I'd definitely go for the blood tests... don't forget to ask for emla cream to numb the area...

I used to suffer with a bad back on and off for about 3 years when I was a child, when I eventually complained and went to the doctors it was a recurring water infection which was cured after a course of antibiotics.

Pfer, how did they diagnose this - did you have to have blood tests.

A urine test would confirm a UTI.

busywizzy · 13/02/2006 14:46

Aero, would it show up regardless of when the urine test was done or would I need to wait until she had another 'attack'

Sorry for all the questions but I sooooo want to help her.

If there is infection present I imagine it would show now bw, but am no expert. Worth testing anyway.

busywizzy · 13/02/2006 14:54

Thanks for advice everyone. Will try and arrange urine test ASAP.
