Sick smell on carpet

We have just had the norovirus spread through our house of 4 boys (and us) and the carpet has taken some serious collateral damage. I have read previous threads about bicarb of soda and have bought some to give it a try, but one website said it can discolour the carpet - has anyone found this to be so ? The carpet has a black base, so I was a bit worried. I have already tried 1001, washing powder (though I did read that washing powder in COLD water was the key). Can't get the smell from under my nose.

I usually dissolve it in some warm water & dab the solution on the carpet. Maybe try it in an inconspicuous area first. If it doesn't work then I'd try a professional carpet shampoo to deep clean & refresh the carpet. You can get those shake 'n' vac powders don't know how good they work though.

The stuff you get from the pet shop to remove your pets accidents works to remove the smell.- I used it in the car on the seats there. It didn't discolour them but of course I don't know about your carpet's colour-fastness.
